“Perfect for a cool stay in Brighton”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

Having been familiar with Hotel Du Vin in Birmingham I decided to choose their hotel in Brighton for a two night stay. The location is excellent and right on the sea front and at the very edge of The Lanes so easy to get to everything.

The staff are slick, efficient and very welcoming. We stayed in a seaview suite and whilst the room was not a large as I would have liked and the view not a great sea view it was a nice room and had twin bath tubes in the room. I don't think the suites are really worth the price though.

The best part of the hotel is their food though. Bistro style with a lot of choice and great flavours and we ended up eating here both nights as we felt we would not find better elsewhere. The breakfasts are also fabulous and their baked eggs are incredible.

Would stay here at a drop of a hat again.

Room Tip: I think their suites are overpriced and would just go for a standard room in future.

We booked a suite for the second of a two night stay in Brighton. Frankly, I wish we had stayed where we were. We stayed in the sea view suite.

The room was slightly shabby and had a tired feel (wardrobe doors wouldn't close, light bulbs not working etc). We arrived at 6pm, by which time we had a constant commentary from security guards on their radios. By 9pm, they were joined by a charming collection of hen and stag parties and Brighton's finest alcoholic idiots. We slept in earplugs....

To be fair, dinner was very pleasant, but at more than £400 for one night, this was a very disappointing experience. We have stayed in 4 of the other hotels in the Hotel Du Vin group. All of the others were more memorable.

Room Tip: If you want a romantic and QUIET stay, don't chose the sea view suite.

We live within a dozen miles or so of Brighton, and a couple or three times a year we like to treat ourselves by taking in a gig (last night it was the magnificent Elvis Costello) or visiting the theatre, and staying overnight.

So far we have been singularly unimpressed by both the Hilton and the Grande - so we thought we'd try the Du Vin.

At the outset let's be clear, the Du Vin is not cheap, there are a lots of other things your could do with the 290 English Pounds that they charged us for last night. To their credit this was a charge for ONE night. Many other hotels in the locality have taken to insisting on a two-night minimum stay at the weekend; this is, speaking quite frankly, a reprehensible and entirely cheap stunt. Bravo to the Du Vin for not joining in this petty game.

The hotel is just a stone's throw from the beach-front of Brighton. They dont have their own parking, they offer a discount on a car park nearby. We emailed about car parking on Thursday, emailing the address on the booking form - we never got a reply. When we queried this, on arrival, we were told that we had emailed the Head Office - they wouldn't know, we were told; we should have emailed the hotel direct. Shame that HO couldn't stir themselves from their slumber and advise us of this.

A black mark for the Head Office, but it is worth mentioning that all the staff encountered, at hotel, were always friendly and helpful.

The reception area is small leading onto a large, informal and atmospheric bar area. This is probably the best bit - it's a good bar and worth visiting even if your not staying as a guest. I sat on one of the comfortable leather sofas, my arm hanging, casually, over the back - where it encountered safety pins. Safety pins. The back of the sofa was secured by safety pins.
This is actually important as we started noticing the bumps, scratches & un-repaired minor damage throughout. Shabby Chic without the Chic is only Shabby, I'm afraid.

Leading off from the Bar / Lounge is the restaurant. We didn't have dinner there, but breakfast the following morning. The lay-out is very attractive, quite Parisian in feel. The breakfast was OK. Not particular extensive, just OK.

I am told that all the rooms are different, ours was on the first floor, down a maze of corridors (beware; if you're planning to have the odd drink or four make sure you know your way back to your room; I'm sure some quests could have been lost for weeks. There are plenty pebbles on the beach, perhaps a pebble or paper trail?). All the rooms are named, ours was called Domain de Trevillion (I think). An odd room. After opening the door, the bathroom is on the right, and you have to go along another corridor before entering your bedroom.

Back to the bathroom, the washbasin and loo (not particularly clean, sadly) were just through the door, but the bath and shower were up a flight a stairs. Oddly quaint. As space was quite limited it was useful that one of us could clean our teeth downstairs, whilst the other could shower up-stairs and then visa versa.

Bedroom: I have a rule of thumb when it comes to bedroom size, if the room is bigger than our own it's spacious - if it's not, it's small. This was small. On the plus side it is FULLY equipped: speedy, free (well done) Wi-Fi, attractive flat screen TV, B&W iPhone dock, tea & coffee (incl. espresso), iron & board, safe, fully stocked mini-bar. Just about everything.
(Again, however, there were signs of minor damage throughout the room; nothing to complain about but enough to think "that would drive me mad, at home").

The bed was large and nicely firm, the pillows, unfortunately, unbelievably soft and thin - a little like trying to rest your head on a cloud.

The windows (not big enough to call 'French') opened onto a tiny area with a table and two chairs and a view of absolutely nothing at all. Apart from the crafty ciggie I can think of no reason why anyone would want to spend any time at all out there.

I was impressed that the noise of the revelry from the downstairs bar didn't permeate up into our room, it was pleasantly quiet. However, please dont think that the walls weren't tissue paper thin - I would be leading you astray, they were. During the night I was woken by someone (presumably nearby) going to the loo (really, I kid you not) and then, at seven a.m. by wife woke me by asking: 'What IS that noise?" - after gathering my senses, I realised that somebody had the sheer effrontery to take a shower at seven in the morning. We were now fully awake (oddly, when we checked in, we were asked if we needed an alarm call - I didn't know that they could arrange an alarm call by shower). I cannot imagine how many people, in the hotel, my wife woke when she used the 'espresso' coffee maker soon afterwards (my best guess, is: everyone).

That's about it- a bit of a curate's egg. Lots of positives - but, in my book, too many negatives to justify the price ticket.

Still, the best in Brighton, to-date, if you're prepared to lash out that amount.

We'll try, again, to find a good value, high quality hotel in Brighton. We'll let you know if we find one.

Thought it was lovely especially the bar and the breakfast room. However we paid £325 for a night in an average room with no sea view and a pokey bathroom. This rate did not include breakfast - I think this is extremely overpriced for what it is.

We stayed at Hotel du Vin whilst visiting friends and can't fault it at all.
The staff were very helpful but not too OTT - there when you needed them.
The room was great - it had everything we needed and a very comfortable bed.
We will definitely visit again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel du Vin Brighton is situated in the Lanes conservation area, a pebbles' throw from the seafront. Its 49 bedrooms are housed in a collection of eccentric Gothic revival and mock Tudor buildings erected, appropriately by a wine merchant on the site of an old inn. Among many interesting features are a heavily carved staircase and bizarre gargoyles, while the original double-height hall now houses the wine bar and Laroche tasting room. The perfect venue for a picturesque wedding or party is the impressively large and airy Dome room. For the best tankered of local ale, Pub du Vin is one of Brighton city center's treasures with its classic pub dining. Out with the Brighton hotel is the wonder and inspiring town itself, with quaint streets dotted with fabulous shops, and of course the famous pier and promenade. ... more   less
