“Greene Room is excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014

Had a private party in the self contained Greene room as this was excellent. It has its own bar, toilets and friendly staff. The food itself was pretty reasonable but as a package it was excellent.

Not ideal for a romantic meal on a Saturday night but good for a busy pub with a good atmosphere.

“Lovely food with a great atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014 via mobile

Had lunch here today (9th feb) which we thoroughly enjoyed.
I had the venison and pheasant pâté followed by the crumbed chicken burger. The pate was lovely although a little big for a starter but as we'd paid £6 for it I didn't grumble - perhaps a smaller portion for a smaller price would be better. The chicken burger was amazing, beautifully cooked with chunky home made chips.
My bf had calamari to start which were ok - a little chewy and really quite salty by the bottom of his bowl. His beef burger with extra cheese bacon and egg was great - he really enjoyed it.

A couple of niggles -
we initially went out the back as no room in the main bar but one of the staff came out and put the rugby on pretty loud so we looked again in the main area as there wasn't any way we wanted to sit eating a meal with that blaring out. Luckily enough for us there was and we were very pleased although the tables aren't really suitable for the large wooden boards they serve the food on.
It was quite expensive although the portions were massive. Added things like extra cheese or bacon on your burger are pretty steep - an extra £1 for 1 rasher of bacon or 1 square of cheese.
Servers - very nice but weren't able to use initiative very well, they took away our cutlery with our starter (after having to ask for some to begin with) and then we had to ask twice when our burgers came.

Overall we had a lovely meal in a cozy pub full of character which was exactly what we were looking for.

Looking forward to returning as there were lots of things on the menu that we wanted to try

“Lovely pub, but a little pricey”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

Great pub in the Laines with a nice olde worlde feel but did seemed quite pricey. Staff friendly and chatty, no complaints. There was not anything on the menu that appealed to us which was a shame and as Hubby is a Veggie it was extremely limited for him - ate in Food for Friends instead which was awesome.

“Whats all the fuss do not eat here”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2014

On the plus side the bar staff and patrons very friendly. comfortable pub and apparently the pub is haunted. On the minus side the food. I was tempted by the beef stew with horse radish dumpling and was advised not to have any sides as this was a hearty meal. Big mistake whilst the presentation was lovely two thirds of the meat was pure fat with strands of beef. The dumpling half (yes not even 1 whole dumpling) did not meet expectations. My husband ordered the fish and chips. There was 2 slices of bread and butter filling a third of the plate and the fish batter was soggy and tasted unpleasant. Pop in here for a drink, some home made pork scratchings and the atmosphere but there are far better restaurants elsewhere in Brighton.

“Disco food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2014

"Ah ha" says I. "I know the spot for a little late bite, The Cricketers!" Cue my friends giving me the bumps. Off we went to indulge ourselves in a glutton competition. A table we had no problem, food ordered we all sat down. Then it started, the music. I'm a huge music fan but I do not need to have my ear drums blown out by mundane Saturday night lad music that caters for drunken men to head butt each other. I asked the waitress is there any chance of turning it down? The reply was it's a Saturday night in Brighton. In fact it was a Saturday night in half the world but what makes Brighton so special? Does no one in Brighton have ear drums? Cue the decibel level rising to that of a volcano erupting through a fog horn. After a brief exchange of words I was told no. So we sat and ate in silence listening to the guitar work and weird lyrics of Kasibian while nobody danced or sang along. Everyone in the restaurant ate their food, heavily salted by tears of frustration. The food itself was average and when one of the party looked inquisitively at the food a waiter was over to us in a flash offering an excuse. An awkward paying of the bills and a quick shuffle out of the place to let the people less disco continue. Eat their during the day maybe, avoid at night.
