“Roast dinner time!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

Yes I would agree with a lot of what other reviewers have said about the decor etc although it's not that bad! The place might need a bit of attention but I've usually found everything clean and if not the serving staff have been quick to put it right. The food isn't the best in the world but the prices are really cheap. If you want to go for a good meal with a choice of meat (all tasty) and a good selection of vegetables you can't go wrong. I've always found the staff friendly and helpful. I usually go in the week at about 5.30pm and the place isn't too crowded. I've never really queued for more than a couple of minutes. My grandchildren think it's the best roast dinner in the whole of Brighton. They much prefer it to places where I have spent £10 plus a head just on food. I understand they do a 'eat as much as you can' breakfast. I'm keen to try that too!

“Best Value Establishment I have been to in Brighton”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

We went there on recommendation and we were not disappointed. A roast meal with all the trimmings and including extra helpings of vegetables, for the price of £3.50 is unbeliever value considering a round of sandwiches at Waitrose cost £3. Ice cream is £1.50 and you can help yourself to unlimited servings.
Food is good and no worse than any other carvery we have been to. It serves food all day so some of the stuff is a little on the dry side but that can be overcome by stirring before serving.
Decor is nice. There is ample parking. We live quite near so it will be a regular place for us to go.

“You get what you pay for in tired grubby surroundings”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012 via mobile

Have eaten here for the past few years so feel able to provide a balanced view of the place.
"The Sportsman" used to be the pub next to Withdean Stadium but was taken over be Crown carveries about 3 years ago.
It has a very large car park which is generally capable of providing sufficient car parking for the carvery and the gym next door.
The entrance is either down steps or slope and leads to the main bar area.
Regulars will know you purchase drinks here and the carvery receipt which must be shown to the carver when collecting your meal. If your not a regular it is not clear how you obtain food as staff are rather minimal.
Many options exist for size of carvery and these had changed on our last visit with the standard carvery had increased to £4.15.
The carvery now does a smaller what used to be child's carvery for about £3.89 which is all rather misleading.
The bar was busy on our visit with one member of staff, never seem to be sufficient staff.
Having ordered and obtained drinks and carvery tickets entered restaurant area.
As usual it was busy with numerous tables with uncollected plates and gravy slops.
Table found, no cutlery and no napkins.
One waitress for whole restaurant got cutlery but forgot napkins.
Then to carvery, meat served by competent but personality lacking member of staff.
Meat was from usual selection but appeared dried out and unappealing.
Vegetables were plentiful but again some appeared tired.
As usual food was on floor where dropped and gravy was sploshed over tables.
The amount of meat seems to vary per customer so I always find trying to make small talk with carver can produce an extra slice.
The restaurant area with its child amusement machines and dark inferior is a little like a cross between Butlins food halls and an old people's home.
It is generally dark, lacking in staff and to be avoided in school holidays at all costs.
That said.......
For just over £4 you are getting a roast meal with unlimited vegetables and reasonably priced drinks.
My tips:
Avoid school holidays
Avoid rush hours eg 1pm and 5pm
Try to get a table near the windows where you can see athletics track and also your meal!

“HORRID & FILTHY”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

Arrived at 4pm and the place was almost empty so made ourselves known to the not bothered waitress that 4 people would like to eat and that was really the last we saw of her till she presented the bill.We got our own drinks from the bar after waiting 15 minutes and when time to choose from the carvery we were told we needed tokens to eat,as we did not have any had to find the invisible waitress to allow us to eat.The food even though cheap for a carvery was not worth it and was dry and tasteless as it had been sat simmering on hot plates or under hot lamps. The decor is tired and in need of urgent refurbishment, broken window panes, filthy window frames, dirty window ledges, ripped carpet held down by brown tape, filthy glasses and wine glasses chipped on the bases of the two we had and yes a lot more besides but really if you have an iron stomach and really could not be fussed on your surroundings then you might like it,staff rude and arrogant, making fun of other diners and really did not have any passion for the job they were in.My first visit and my last visit disgusting!!!
