I took some prospective clients for lunch - there were 7 of us and the restaurant phoned ahead to offer us seating either upstairs or down - we opted for upstairs. The food was all well cooked full of flavour and well presented. It's not cutting edge but it's exactly what you want with a mixed group - pretty much everyone went for steak and everything came cooked to order. Our waitress was friendly and very accomodating and we stayed until about 15:45 as the amibance was great and we were all enjoying ourselves so much - was a real asset for my meeting which was most successful. And the price I thought was very reasonable considering 3 courses, apertives, wine, coffee and digestives too.

Tucked away on a side street away from the awful West Street....I might add just far enough away...I went there last Friday & good job we booked a week in advance it was rammed.
The reason for it being rammed was the nice buzzy atmosphere on the ground floor (never eaten upstairs so cant comment), lovely decor BUT mainly the steak...its lovely.
We had starters, steak to share (steak part was £50 to share) & a bottle wine, totalling around £100 which was well worth & the steak was gorgeous & cooked to perfection.

Finally a British restaurant that can cook steak, we went to this place with an Argentinian friend of ours, and even she was impressed!

It's a packed smallish restaurant so I suggest you book if you are going at the weekend, service was friendly and knowledgeable, wine list was pretty decent - got stuck into the old vine Zinfandel which to be fair you can always rely on but there was a lot to choose from.

Desserts were equally as decadent as the kilo of beef we shared, the chips cooked in beef dripping have me salivating thinking about them - you have to try them.

Honestly no complaints, just don't eat there too often your waistline won't thank you!

We have been to The Coal Shed in the past and found it very acceptable but having visited it this week we were most disappointed. Gone was the lunch time menu it was replaced by a most confusing menu, couldn't distinquish starters from mains and the deserts (extra) were an astronomical price some £7.00 plus. I don't think we will be visiting again which is a shame.

After walking round and round the lanes trying to decide where to eat we came across The Coal Shed. It was very busy but we spotted a spare table so thought we would give it a go! We were not disappointed. The food was lovely and the burger and chips was one of the best I have had - delicious!!
