Four 70 year olds on the Volks railway and what a great little trip we had from the pier to the Marina. A lovely experience for kids of all ages

This old electric railway makes for a nice journey along the seafront to the marina. The fare is about the same as taking a bus. There's little protection from the elements, so it's best to ride it in good weather.

Did you travel to Brighton by train? Believe it or not the prototype for the modern electric trains running between London and the coast is a little single track railway, operated by the local council and serving just three halts along Madeira Drive.

The Volks electric railway, built in the late nineteenth century and restored after heavy damage during the second world war was the first of its kind in the world, an you can still ride it today for a very reasonable fare.

Strangely, despite family connections in Brighton and countless visits to the city, I had never ridden on the railway before. A weekend break with my girlfriend provided the perfect opportunity for this, and we enjoyed an interesting, if slightly wind blown, journey to Black Rock and back for just 3.50 each. The staff were friendly and helpful, and deserve a special mention for returning my rucksack to me after I inadvertently left it on the seat opposite.

If you have half an hour spare or are heading for the eastern end of the seafront I would certainly recommend letting the train take the strain.

Cracking little service makes you very reminiscent for holidays when I was a child happy days. Especially when the sun is shining an ice cream cracking.

No trip to Brighton is complete without a trip on this wonderful railway.

Runs between Brighton Pier and The Marina, with one stop halfway.
