“Brilliant museum, very disappointing cafe”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

The Museum and Art Gallery are fantastic: this is an exceptional regional collection, especially for the applied arts and Art Nouveau & Art Deco particularly noteworthy. First-class temporary exhibitions & programmes for all ages and tastes.

The museum cafe used to be a lovely and welcoming place: very good value, traditional, with family-oriented menus and staffed by friendly locals of all ages. On its 'makeover' some years ago, the cafe prices shot up overnight, and existing staff seem to have been replaced by much younger people, who are generally a lot less friendly & welcoming, or even interested & nowhere near as efficient or attentive as their predecessors (as noted by other observers on this site) Very sad to find this in a council-supported facility in 'Green Brighton.' I'll certainly be supporting the museum, but giving the snooty cafe a miss in future.

“I love this museum but beware the cafe service!”
Reviewed April 13, 2014

This is a fascinating museum - its ground floor display of furniture through the ages is particularly fascinating and I enjoy visiting it whenever we return to Brighton.

The gallery cafe overlooks this exhibition and used to be very good. The menu is quite small but along with the standard toasties and jackets it offers some interesting quiche, which this time was served with 'new potato and caramelised onion' according to the menu. When we eventually got served (and it wasn't especially busy but the wait was long) three of us ordered that, plus a toastie for a fourth and two decaf lates and a sparkling water.

The waitress was very inexperienced and quite 'dippy' and had no pad to write anything on. 'Don't worry - I'll remember.' The drinks arrived - only it was two cappuccinos, a lemonade and an orange juice. At first we thought it was just someone else's ordered but we watched it go back into the kitchen and probably down the sink! When the drinks finally arrived they were served by leaning right across people to place them on the table.

The quiche was delicious but the 'potato and caramelized onion' accompaniment was actually a rather strange broccoli or cabbage and sweet potato salad in some kind of dressing. Personally I liked it a lot but my friends didn't and it would have been nice to have been told if what we were ordering differed from what was on the menu!

Brighton is not short of eateries so while I'll certainly be returning to the museum, I think we'll be giving the cafe a miss next time!

Lots of Victorian household items, several collections of mugs, artwork, ceramics, etc. Well worth a visit while in town.

“Interesting museum, especially the 'Brighton' bits...”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

An great fee museum, small enough to be manageable but with enough variety to suit all tastes for both adults and children. The exhibits about Brighton through the ages were especially interesting and the building itself is worth taking time over. This complex of public spaces including the attached Brighton Dome make this a location in the city centre worth spending a bit of time in.

“Great Museum”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

I love Brighton Museum and I've spent a lot of time there. Some of the visiting shows are outstanding and for a relatively small museum (compared to London) it attracts first class displays. There is a small charge for some of the exhibits in the upstairs gallery but if you don't want to pay the rest of the museum is free and is certainly worth a walk around.
The exhibits cover a wide range of subjects including costume and dress, natural history and climate, Egyptology, pottery, cinema as well as other local history. Quite a lot packed into the beautiful old Pavillion building (that has had a face lift since it was annexed onto the old library.)
If you fancy there's a small cafe on the first floor serving tea and cake (although personally if it was a nice day I'd venture out to the pavillion cafe and sit in the sunshine)
