“SHOEBOX ON A SHOESTRING!”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Cecil House last week for 3 nights and we were very happy as our room was small but had a FAB view of the old pier! The windows had lovely original shutters, bed comfy, shower, and large washbasin good, staff very helpful and friendly, room quite small! hence the shoebox! but good value for Brighton! So people who have given "negative" reviews.......just get a life! We will stay again. May and Howard Beevers from York.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are sea views, others are at the back facing an old church.

Me and 13 girls stayed here while on a hen party in Brighton, we read the reviews before we went and were horrified by the thought of staying here, however we were pleasantly surprised. It was absolutely fine, staff very friendly, rooms were perfect for what we needed, iron and ironing board in all rooms and tea making facilities, breakfast was really good and fresh. All in all a good time and I would stay here again.

We stayed here for a hen do and for that purpose it was ok. The breakfast menu was perfect, and the service was amazing.

The only problem we had was that our shower kept blocking up and you had to turn it off mid shower just so that the water drained down.

When we told reception about it we were told, "It's because you have long hair". We then had to point out that it happened on the first day and none of us had washed our hair. They did then rectify the problem by pouring something down the plug hole, but I think the shower was dodgy as it still kept filling up, just not as much.

Watch out for the price of pre-booking breakfast as it can be a rip off compared to the cost of the actual items on the breakfast menu.

I would come here again for a holiday with friends but not for a romantic holiday as the room didn't seem clean and it depends how much this bothers you.

Just returned from a lovely stay at this hotel. Yes it could do with a little revamp but not a priority! Visiting in a group of ten girls for a hen party we was pleasantly surprised at our weekends accommodation! Lovely reception staff who were so helpful and possibly the happiest most pleasant staff serving breakfast daily in smoky's next door! The hotel room had everything you needed, perfect location, welcoming feeling all round. After looking at some of the previous reviews before going we was all slightly apprehensive. But was so happy on arrival as for us it was perfect, for the ££££ we paid and the star rating clearly stated we could not complain!!!!

We booked directly with the hotel which may have given us an advantage but we got a nice large room with great view of the sea. The beds were comfortable and we got everything we needed. Did not really see much of the staff but the reception at the Granville was really helpful. No breakfast but Smokey's in the basement did a great lunch. Overall it was fine . . .

We did a price comparison for best deal in Brighton and Cecil House came up with the best rates for a sea view.
We got there and was checked in by the hotel next door which is lovely but probably much more expensive.
This perhaps unrealistically raised our expectations. Our room was clean, comfortable with everything you need, but it was not boutique amazing.
On the plus side the location is fantastic, great sea view, and close to everything.
I would stay there again.

I decided to ignore the reviews, after all £80 a night on a weekend in Brighton, not so bad. We also chose to ignore the filth, not even a thinly veiled attempt to clean the room. The surfaces were completely covered in dust and my friend ended up with what can only be described as bed bug bites (I didn't actually get into a bed!). What really wound me up though was on the 2nd day when our front door key wouldn't work, we were treated to a tirade of abuse from the manager, who then offered a full refund for us to leave (with a total refund for both nights!!). Definitely not a person that should be employed in the hospitality industry, and definitely not a place to stay.
