“Pity about the breakfast”
Reviewed June 27, 2007

We enjoyed our stay at Drakes which is a bright, breezy kind of place .Just right for its seaside location. It was such a pity then that the breakfast was so disappointing. The excuse seems to be that this is a seperate business and not part of the hotel management. Not good enough. If they are to live up to there reputation and price they need to be running the place. We found ourselves battling through Brighton's wind and rain looking for the fresh .satisfying kind of breakfast we look forward to when on our hols..We found it but it seems a shame that we couldn't just roll out of bed and enjoy a pleasurable meal.

I went with my boyfriend for a romantic weekend away and it didn't disapoint - the room (attic room) was very modern and tastefully decorated, great big bath; lovely linen and bed; comfy chairs - it was very clean. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The continental breakfasts delivered to the room were great - quite pricey though. No room service menu apart from the breakfast.

The air conditioning wasn't working and at night the room was boiling; they did give us money off the final bill but even though they knew about it - we did have to complain before they mentioned anything.

It was a great treat and indulgence; turned out to be a very expensive weekend away though!

Great room (circular sea-facing), view, bed and bath. Varied meal in the restaurant - a main course dish which was not warm enough; poor service. Great souffle. Overall 6.5 out of 10. Would not return, just not polished enough.

Drakes is a really special beautiful boutique hotel. I stayed for 1 night (a quick getaway) with my boyfriend, booked via [--]. We had one of their smaller rooms on the 4th floor and I was a little worried ahead of time that it would be slightly disappointing or small. It really was gorgeous and they clearly put the same effort and care into every room and aspect of your stay. The room was impeccably clean and the design is all so lovely. Our room had a little balcony which we could climb out onto from the window (actually sweetly unique) and the little touches made it a really special stay. Service was excellent, they gave us a late check out with prior arrangement and even stored our bags after we checked out for the remainder of the day and called us a cab to the station when we collected them. I would definitely visit again and would recommend it to anyone.

This hotel is excellent but needs to invest in double glazing. The street noise is pretty awful. Other than that, this place is fantastic and the rooms are a dream.

I booked a room for two nights at Drakes Hotel in Brighton, together with dinner at the Gingerman at Drakes, a show at the Brighton Centre and a spa treatment session at The Treatment Rooms (which we can also both thoroughly recommend!), as a birthday surprise for my girlfriend.
We had dined at the Gingerman at Drakes before (on both that and this occasion the food and service were exemplary) and wondered what the hotel was like to stay at, well now we know that it's fab!
The room we stayed in (205) was smaller than I was expecting, with just enough room for the double bed, a wardrobe, a small desk and the fabulous free standing bath! The bath was positioned so that you could lay in it and look straight out of the window, over the sea! The view from the other window, above the desk, was of the wonderfully bizarre Brighton Pier.
The small bathroom adjoining the bedroom doubled as a shower room, with water-sealed glass doors and a large shower head in the ceiling. It took us a few minutes to work out how to use it without soaking everything else in the room but once we had it was great fun!
All the decor and furnishings in the room and the hotel in general, were of a very high standard and the staff provided a great service and made us feel very welcome.
If I had to complain about anything at all (and is the only reason I'm not giving Drakes an excellent rating) it's because they charge an extra £12.50/day park a car at the hotel. Parking in Brighton is VERY difficult (the city is quite openly anti-car) but this is not a cheap hotel and I had expected the insecure, on-site parking to be included. I would expect a hotel in this class to at the very least offer discounted parking at nearby secure parking for guests or a valet parking service for that sort of daily charge.
However, all things considered we had a great time at Drakes and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone who was looking for an elegant, thoroughly modern retreat for a romantic getaway or a base from which to explore fun-filled Brighton.

  • Liked — The unusal touches like the sea-view bath and shower wet-room.
  • Disliked — The car parking facilities.

I'd love to write a positive review on this hotel because the room was fab, the location was perfect and the staff were very friendly and helpful But oh god! The traffic and the noise!

Positives:
The Room: beautifully decorated, very pleasant single room - small but perfectly formed with double bed, lovely bed linen, large telly, complimentary Hildon water, tea/coffee making facilities with coffee 'percolator' , shortbread and real coffee! The bathroom was again full of mod cons, mood lighting, shower, White House (or is it White Stuff? can't remember!) toiletries and massive white fluffy towels.
The view from the room was good although the window was at an angle so when sitting in bed, unless you're a contortionist, there's no way you'd be able to see out. Loads of magazines. good lighting and hairdryer. The 'wardrobe' was a clever use of space behind the TV - bit tricky to get into but sufficient.

The Staff: very pleasant, very helpful, nothing was too much trouble and any requests were dealt with in record time!

The Location: Right on the sea front with a fair bit of parking in front of the hotel (very rare in these parts)

Negatives:
The noise - I like to sleep with my window open but after listening to 2 hours of horrendous traffic noise decided not to. However, I hadn't reckoned on my noisy neighbours. Unfortunately, the single room i was in had an adjoining door, through which sound was well and truly magnified. When they left their room at 1130 after banging around, my heart sank. I knew that they were heading off for the clubs of Brighton and after a long day at work, all i wanted was a good night's kip. They returned at 3.00 with a friend who, after a loud crash of thedoor, loudly asked whether it was their room! Urm, they had a key to it so yes, the answer was obviously going to be yes! After this, I decided the best option was to open the window to drown out their noise..... a sort of counter noise attack but obviously this didn't work either! Hey ho, such is life.

The Bar: Nicely decorated but at night, filled to the brim with folk waiting to eat at the restaurant w hich is apparently quite good although I didn't eat there. Quite honestly, for the amount the hotel cost (£125 per night for a single room, not including breakfast), you'd kind of hope that there'd be some sort of residents lounge but nope, nothing as far as I could see.

So all in all, fine for folk who are wanting to go out on the razz but not so much for those who want to get away from it all (maybe the back rooms are quieter or those higher up?)

  • Liked — The design and layout
  • Disliked — Noise, noise and more traffic noise!
