Our room was tired but the receptionist did say it was about to be refurbished! Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. All staff really friendly and helpful and seemed to genuinely want to make your stay as good as possible. Nothing was too much trouble - even at 3.30am! Food lovely. Great position in terms of activities BUT the noise from the street means we won't be back! Often didn't quieten down until 4.30am so we had almost no sleep. Shame as otherwise wonderful.

I had my doubts as most Puma run hotels are being run into the ground with silly petty cost cutting measures, but I must say this place is better than most.
The location is excellent, the food very good and the staff are at least trying to help. My wife , 15 year old son and I were given a seafacing large room with breakfast for just £87 a night. I ahve paid twice that in Brighton for much worse venues.
Only niggles were lack of hot water in the evenings and the lack lustre bar staff. There were 5 of them working at 6pm on a Monday with just 6 customers, but it took nearly 15 minutes to get served. Oh and if you don't like noise outside forget it, the road and the revellers keep going most of the night.

Room Tip: Book by phone and not on the internet. Puma's website is dire.

We have stayed at The Old Ship before - earlier in the year. It is in the best location - right opposite the beach and just a few minutes away from the Lanes and the Pier. We decided to try it again this week. But things have gone downhill since we last stayed.

The receptionist upon arrival was laconic rather than friendly. She gave us our keys and directed us to a room on the third floor with a beautiful view of the fire exits and the external stairs (pictured) - but at least it was quiet and the window could be opened to let some air in. The room is furnished quite well with a large comfortable bed, a writing desk and a chair and large closet. The TV is equipped with a large bright screen and there is also a trouser press and iron / board hidden away. There are tea making facilities. The bathroom was old and worn and could do with a good scrub. It felt dirty, with mold on the walls and dirty grout in the tiles.

The worst thing : No hot water in the evening. We searched for hot water at 17:00 and 18:00 and 19:00. None available. I tried again when we returned from our evening out - 11 pm - still none. This is NOT acceptable ... at any place - let alone a hotel that you’re paying £75 a night for. The water ran hot in the morning.

We went down to the bar for a nightcap. We arrived at an empty bar. A young bartender came around the corner after a minute - or so - and said “We’ll be with you in a minute.” He returned after about 2 minutes and served another gentleman who had just launched himself up to the bar - evidently in a hurry. The bartender then disappeared again.A minute or so later another bar-man appeared and deigned to serve us. In fact, it appeared that there were three young men behind the bar - ‘serving’ about eight guests - but you woudlen't have guessed! We would have stayed for another drink, but it was not worth the hassle (or the wait )... so we returned to our room disappointed.

In the morning when we checked out, the receptionist gave us a harsh look as she collected our keys. No goodbye, or a thanks or a please visit again. No comment at all. She was probably just glad to see us go.

We have already (previously) booked another night in December at this hotel but - on this experience - we are considering cancelling the reservation.

Good points: The location is perfect .
Negative points: Not as good as the Umi (a few meters down the road) - which is cheaper and friendlier. No hot water in the evening. Tired, dusty decor. Weary staff.

I stayed at this hotel with a group of friends. The facilities were very good and every where was clean!! The staff are professional, friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble for them.
There is a vast choice for breakfast and would highly recommend the full English breakfast.

The location is perfect - right on the sea front and within walking distance of Brighton Pier :-)

I would definitely stay again.

spent one night here and was glad that was all. the hotel's location is great but what a noise! Room was nice and spacious and had been updated recently. Bed was comfy but we had the noisiest toilet I have ever heard, obviously the plumbing hasn't been updated. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

A few of our rooms (due to the age of the building) work on a saniflo system, which when flushing will sound for a short while

This hotel has a fantastic location, with friendly helpful staff. The food was good quality and very enjoyable The rooms were nice and comfortable, we upgraded to a sea view room, which was bright clean with a brilliant view. We stayed on a Sunday night when it was blowing a gale and raining so it was very quiet in the street, but I can imagine it to be quite noisy at the weekends, because you could hear people talking and laughing as they walked by! However I would recommend this hotel and would certainly go back there again. Thanks for a lovely birthday weekend! :)
