Our first stay at The Old Ship Hotel and overall we were impressed.

We had the newly refurbished Superior room on arrival, which was beautifully decorated throughout. I loved the wall canvases as a finishing touch. A good shower in the bathroom, but this does tend to flood the floor, as it needs a proper seal on the screen. A lovely comfy king-size bed too. These rooms are on the side of the building, so the street noise does travel upwards, but you have to expect noise until the early hours in Brighton I'm afraid. No aircon in the room, but a ceiling fan that does create a nice gentle breeze to sleep under. Window's could have opened more to allow for more breeze to come into the room.

The staff were lovely, from a warm welcome on arrival, to the bar staff serving the front seafront terrace and also Gillian who works on the breakfasts in the morning (she was fab). Buffet style breakfast is really good and a lot of choice. The coffee machines also played music whilst dispensing, fab touch!

The seafront terrace is in such a brilliant position to watch the world go by and enjoy a drink in the sunshine too. The hotel is also in a great position for the pier, shops, night life (gay or straight) and the restaurants.

Great to also see the hotel supporting Gay Pride, with rainbow balloons and flags everywhere.

Overall we were impressed with the hotel and will be back in the future.

Room Tip: Choose a superior room as these are recently renovated, downside is they are on a side street so you...

Thank you for your great review and look forward to welcoming you back again for other weekends too.

It is important that we involve the hotel in the festival and will continue to support this.

New windows are currently in the planning stages with the local authority and once passed should be installed from October.

I look forward to welcoming you back

Before I booked this hotel I read the reviews and they were a mixed bunch, but overall there were more positives than negatives so we booked.
Well from the moment we pulled into the car park everyone was great and helpful the Reception staff were friendly and we paid £20 per night to upgrade to a seaview room. Now, was the bed clean and comfortable? YES, Was the Bathroom clean and tidy with good quality towels? YES could the room have been a little better painted? YES.
We knew about the noise from the sea front but it is right in the middle of the holiday season so you can expect it. The food, including breakfast was very good and again the service from the restaurant and bar staff was great even though they were all busy.
In summary, we had a great weekend, where hotel staff wanted to make sure you enjoyed yourself, you just have to bring some ear plugs for the street noise. Will we be going back - ABSOLUTLY !!!

Room Tip: Book a sea view room, and take some ear plugs for the street noise, the view is fantastic

I was expecting renovated hotel - it was, but not the room. The room had a tiny bed - not even king size so we were squeezed together. old furniture was faded and worn. Pictures on wall were faded. Dirty curtains - mmm don't want to know what was on them. Noisy side of hotel next to deliveries so late night music and early morning service vehicles left me tired. There was no bed for my son so we had to call down and get them to bring in a spare bed and have it made. Rusty screw in shower area. I hate curtains, much prefer glass instead of getting stuck to the shower curtain. Walls were like plastic - very plain and boring. No access to balcony or ability to open windows more than and inch or two. Vert tired fittings in bathroom - all the sparkle had left the chrome or plated fitting ten years ago. I could barely understand the receptionist - english was definitely not his first language. Food was good, decor downstairs was good, staff were friendly. Parking is an issue and expensive and it was not obvious how to get there as there is a one way system which we spent 20+ minutes going around to try and find entrance to car park - which was unattended. Wifi was available FOC for the slower speed 500k which was OK.

Thank you for your review.

Refurbished rooms are sold as a new room type and can only assume you did not book one of these. All rooms have standard 4ft 6 double beds.

For safety reasons rooms are not able to have the windows open fully.

Refurbishment plans are under way with all public areas, restaurant and bar being redecorated and 32 bedrooms being now refurbished.

Stayed two nights at the Old ship

What you get in a standard room
Was in a room that backed onto a court yard smells from local restaurants enter room if windows are open. No air conditioning, windows only open a few inches, you have to ask for fan but not many available. First night the room was 36 celius, this was also due to towel heater on in the bathroom, and it can only be turned off by removing the fuse. The hotel provided a fan heater which was put on cold absolutely useless. I did not sleep very well.

Bed made up with a fitted sheet and quilt, no top sheet which was needed in the current heat wave.

Kettle Coffee/tea including fruit and herbal provided, lots of hangers, iron and iron board, trousers press but it did not work, hair dryer and bible. Reasonable quality soap, shampoo, shower gel and body lotion, replaced if used.

The decoration of the bedroom appears that it had recently being decorated but not the hall way which had water stains the actual bed room was small. With a separate toilet and hand basin, no towel or soap in this room and a bathroom with a sink water pressure very low, bath with a hand held shower again pressure low, putty around window very soiled. However the bathroom was very clean. Room not serviced until 2pm

Restaurant

Had dinner in the main restaurant well presented, tasted very good, value for money. However I felt the afternoon team is a bit overpriced at £25 for two. Service was appalling. Was serviced by staff and staff then disappeared. Refill of tea not provided.

Overall, it was a good stay but I have not given a higher score due to uncomfortable first night.

Thank you for your review.

Towel rails are switched off at the plug. I am sorry this was left on as due to the extreme weather my team were instructed to switch off all. Additional fans have been purchased however due to high demand we could not source enough for the entire hotel and now looking for addtional fans.

Rooms are serviced with departures first to allow arriving guests to get in as early as possible.

I fully take on board your other comments and will be sharing with my team to see how we can improve upon things.

I trust that despite this we can welcome you back again

Right by the Lanes shopping area and facing the sea, you could not get a better position. Car parking could be a problem, because of limited space, however we managed it, cost £23 sounds high, but good for the area. Still can't believe hotels charge for car parking, but probably justified here! Food excellent evening meal and breakfast being up there with the best we have had. Value good as we went on Daily Mail deal.

On the whole a very nice holey, staff were good and the food in the hotel was lovely, but a couple of issues need to be sorted we stayed in a newly refurbished room which did get very warm, with the window only opening a few inches (very old window) and there was no air conditioning and only the ceiling fan which did not make a lot of difference so some sort of extra fans or air conditioning unit si needed. also late at night their can be a lot of noise from outside, with people going past the hotel until the very early hours 3 / 4am, of the 3 nights we are at the hotel we were woken up on 2 nights by the noise so the windows need extra glazing to reduce noise levels

Thank you for your review.

Unfortunately due to the age of the building, air conditioning is not a simple solution though addtional fans are available.

We are currently applying for a revised planning permission to replace the windows with acoustic glass which should reduce the noise significantly once installed.
