Description: 8 Years ago when Dawn and I were working in Dubai and she was expecting Stanley, we decided it was time to settle down and shed the expat lifestyle. After working as a chef for over a period of 20 years overseas, gaining experience and knowledge in a range of eclectic cuisines in world class hotels and restaurants with the latter years spent leading kitchen brigades, I felt it was time to "go it alone". Having both traveled to India on numerous occasions with a shared passion for it's food and culture as well as an inspirational stint at 'The Cinnamon Club' and there being a big Indian influence in the kitchens in Dubai which I also embraced, the decision for our future restaurant to be Indian felt very natural to us both and so The Chilli Pickle was born. The last time I worked in Brighton 28 years ago was as a silver service banquet waiter at the Metropole Hotel whilst studying catering at Brighton Tech (now City College). Dawn has always loved Brighton from regular visits whilst living in London and I've always had a soft spot for Brighton and the fact we were doing something quite different we knew it was the perfect place to start. After searching for the right property for nearly a year we found a spot in the cobbled lanes amongst the jewellery and antique shops in Meeting House Lane. The space was perfect. 50 Covers with a real bistro feel to it and a functional but small kitchen space. With an initial slow start The Chilli Pickle gradually grew through word of mouth and the support of our now regular clientele. As we got busier and gained feedback from diners we knew we were on the right track and so our confidence grew and our style became more clearly defined. After two and a half years at Meeting House Lane an opportunity came our way that we felt we could not refuse... A move to the restaurant space at myhotel Brighton. We knew this was a big step for us, but believed we had something special in The Chilli Pickle and had the passion and drive to continue to make this work along with the constant support of our original core team as well as some new additions. After 4 years in our new venue we have gone from strength to strength. The restaurant has grown in reputation nationally as well as locally with numerous awards and most importantly we continue to welcome our regulars back and enjoy meeting new customers. We also provide The Chilli Pickle Canteen - a delivery service offering a unique experience of in-home Indian dining. Bespoke boxed Grand Thalis, Railways Trays & Biryani Sets all inspired by our travels to India. We are very proud of what we have achieved and are excited about the future. We will retain our standards all the way with attention to detail, consistency and a love for what we do. Alun Sperring Chef/Director

We had the tapas style lunch for £13, it was delicious and very reasonably priced. Lots of variety and beautifullly presented. The waiter was very informative about the food.

I was a little dubious when I first saw the menu however all four of us had fantastic meals. Very tasty and nicely presented, wonderful aromas and flavours. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and the staff were friendly and knowledgable - explaining each dish to us as it was presented. I would definately recommend for somewhere different to your typical chain restaurant. A great dining experience.

Given the chance, DH and I like to eat Indian food, so when we had a babysitter for the day this month we sneaked off to Brighton for lunch at the Chilli Pickle. It’s got a good reputation, friends with similar tastes to us had been and liked it, so I was looking forward to a good meal. The restaurant has a modern canteen vibe, with plenty of space and friendly service.

There is a separate lunch and evening menu, with some overlap between the two. From the lunch menu we picked a thali, because it gives you a great chance to try a range of dishes, plus one of our favourites, a Mysore masala dosa. The outstanding thing about the thali was the range of chutneys. Beetroot chutney, chili mint chutney, another spicy green chutney, plus a pink one made great accompaniments to the main dishes. The thali included a crispy kidney bean patty, and paneer in a crispy coating, great little starters. We also ordered Chawal Ke cheese, as a second starter, of a rice and corn croquette with cheese within served with plum chutney, which was reminiscent of an Indian breaded brie and cranberry!

The main dish for the thali was butter chicken, accompanied by a generous portion of rice, plus dal and a small potato currry. The chicken dish was served in a rich thick tomato sauce, which balanced well the rice and dal. The masala dosa was enormous, a generously sized rice pancake stuffed with potato and lots of tiny peas. The coconut chutney on the side was fresh flavoured and balanced the blander potato well. It was served with a good portion of vegetable curry, which included some delicious courgette pieces and an Indian vegetable called the drumstick which you can find out about in the restaurant blog.

The thali included a small dish of stewed spiced fruit accompanied by a piece of yellow sponge which made a good sweet end to the meal: it would have been good to have room to try more of the desserts. One of the highlights of the meal was a mint and lemon drink which worked well on a hot and steamy August day in Brighton. Compared to the Ambrette at Rye, the Chilli Pickle is more canteen than fine dining, but the food is good and the portions are great value for money. The King thali, which includes a starter and dessert cost £13, and the dosa £8.50. There is also a children’s menu if you are in town with the kids for lunch.
