Description: Independent bar à vin, restaurant & cocktail bar based in The Lanes, Brighton. We are a unique bar à vin & restaurant with a passion for great food & wine. We have put a great deal of time & love into selecting our wines. At Plateau you can discover interesting & affordable wines that you are unlikely to see on other local wine lists. Our selection is mostly natural with some biodynamic & organic examples. We have sourced wines from local Sussex producers to renowned names & newcomers. To soak up the wine we serve ‘bites’, small dishes perfect to share or great as a starter. Follow your ‘bites’ with a ‘plateau’ to share or a 'plat' & that’s our dinner experience… although don’t forget dessert! Our chefs source organic, fresh, local produce as much as possible.Did we mention the cocktails?

OK, Brighton's a great place for restaurants but what if you just want classic wine bar fare - you know, decent wine, pleasant atmosphere and some lite bites to eat? This is where things get awkward because most of the bars in Brighton are aimed at the yoof scene - which largely comprises of Totty tottering around on platform shoes in their unfeasibly short micro-skirts and shorts. Enter Plateau. Great wine list - friendly (and knowledgeable without being condescending) staff - you can also get some of the most professional cocktails we've seen outside of London or Harry's Bar in Venice - stays open late - ditto the kitchens if you want some food. We went there late on a Friday night - they were happy to find us a place and fit us in - and their potato wedges with cheese and oil are in a league of their own. Great place.

Food - above expectations and genuinely surprising.
Wines and cocktails - expert knowledge and brilliant preparation, also efficient service and not pretensious.
Service - unbelievably excellent, charming french hostess who was funny but professionally consistent.
I have paid much more money for inferior food and service in the past and this place blew me away.

I've eaten here several times and it gets better every time - and more crowded. Yes, the menu is limited, but it does change daily and it is all freshly- and well-cooked. Excellent choice of wines or other drinks, very knowledgeable and friendly staff. It's a busy place and is never going to be for a quiet chat or a romance a deux; but it is where you go if you want a busy, lively and yes, sometimes noisy, atmosphere. AND good quality food and drink!
My fave place in Brighton - but you do have to like busy places.

went for dinner and was shocked by how bad it was. Menu boring, staff rude, food was like a cheap cafe on motorway- shouldn't have to pay for that! very fatty fried basic. tables were crammed next to us and our friends. We could hear all other tables conversations. Not nice atmosphere. Staff were very stroppy when we informed that 2 of our orders were wrong. We also ordered 2 bottles of wine before they had one we wanted- apparently "stock hadn't arrived. "

Did you go to Plateau?

I'm really sorry to hear that you had such a poor dining experience, but was it at Plateau? Menu boring? Staff rude? Cheap cafe on motorway? Fatty fried basic? This is insulting for all of the effort that our team puts in to creating an enjoyable dining experience, which I believe to be professional & passionate. Our head chef is well known to be one of the best in Brighton.

If your review was about Plateau, I am really sorry you feel this way, because we care immensely about our guests experience and our final product. We cook with fresh, local ingredients from top producers, and when it is busy we can occasionally run out of certain dishes and wines. After all, we have limited space and also need to minimize waste. We are not a restaurant that has a freezer full of frozen food to access.

Why not say something on the night? Or when your table is asked if everything is OK? What day did you visit? Which dishes did you not enjoy? Which wines were not available? Are you working for one of our competition?

We have seen your other reviews and they are polarised to say the least. We believe in unbiased, genuine reviews on Trip Advisor (and elsewhere) but on this occasion we are astonished. We are very reasonable restaurateurs and would be pleased if you visited us to discuss your experience in more detail.

I've walked past this restaurant hundreds of times and never thought that it would be this good. Brighton has loads of ordinary restaurants with very few really decent ones. That's changed now that we've found Plateau. We went in on spec. on a busy Saturday and it was busy but not rammed. Decor is 'industrial-chic' on a small scale but cosy.
Staff were really friendly and were all French (or extras from 'Allo 'Allo), taking time to answer our queries. The menu is bistro-style from fantastic-looking breakfasts to tasty lunches and dinners. There's a specials board and a number of sharing plates which looked delicious. We had a Bavette Steak, which was served with a beautiful home-made relish and chunky chips and fish-cakes with a salad. All served by great waiting staff and all for under £40 including a couple of drinks apiece.
I intend to make a day of it one day, working my way through breakfast, lunch, dinner and A&E. Great addition to a pretty poor restaurant scene in Brighton
