“A very tired shabby hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at this hotel recently and thought it to be a very tired, shabby seaside hotel which needed much money spent on it to bring it to an acceptable standard. The room was old and had a damp patch stain above the bed and certainly needed redecoration desperately.

The male staff were very polite and helpful, where as the breakfast duty female member was both obnoxious and rude.

I would certainly not recommend this hotel to anyone and would certainly not stay here again if it was the last hotel in Brighton

On balance, an unhelpful review for all our stakeholders more so given the good value for money the Courtlands offers and its peerless location in Hove. There is not a week which goes by where beds, rooms and the common parts receive our care and attention which our many regular customers appreciate

The staff here are excellent, the public areas pretty good and the breakfast acceptable but the hotel is let down by poor standards of upkeep and maintenance. Carpets in corridors are badly rucked and could cause a trip - they should have been re-stretched years ago. Window frames are rotting and windows loose and rattling. Our bathroom had poor plumbing, loose and broken fittings, mould, dust, cracked tiles - the list goes on. Bed comfortable but the bedroom generally had seen better days with dust on lamps and doorframe, light bulb out, loose window, stained wall, etc. This could be a nice hotel but certainly not good value for money in its present condition. Badly in need of refurbishment.

We appreciate the candour of this review and are pleased that your enjoyed many aspects of your stay

As you may have seen, a large extension is in course of being built and once this is complete we will be able to undertake a more comprehensive refurbishment of the older parts of the hotel. As a Victorian building ongoing maintenance is a labour of love and we have a clear program in place. Our housekeeping staff are committed to presenting the rooms to their very best and we are delighted you found the bed comfy

Hopefully you will see further improvements when you next visit

Stayed here on a Saturday night as it was close to Hove Cricket Ground. As other reviewers have previously stated the hotel is handy for parking which is its greatest selling point. However it is looking very shabby and tired, peeling wallpaper and paint, cracked tiles and cables hanging from the ceiling. We had booked a family room and ended up with a room with a double bed and a separate single linked room. Room was reasonably clean but decor is very dated. Breakfast was OK but not brilliant, with hindsight I wish I had not pre booked breakfast but had instead saved my money and ate at one of the many little cafes and coffee shops close to the hotel. It is not worth £7.95 per person!. Staff were Ok only one member of staff a man on Saturday evening was friendly and chatty, the others generally just scowled. I suppose it was OK for the money but I wouldn't stay here again.

The Courtlands was fortunate at the weekend to have been able to welcome both people connected with the London to Brighton cycle run [a quite magnificent fund raising event] and those folk lucky enough to be attending the Cliff Richard concert at the County Cricket Ground

Naturally we were pleased that this guest and her family found so many positive aspects of their stay, not least the size and configuration of the family room. As a grand Victorian building stretching comfortably along [arguably] Hove's top location, maintenance and enhancements to the fabric of the hotel are ongoing and a labour of love

Requiring a last minute booking for a hotel in Brighton I booked Courtlands Hotel via Laterooms.com and was very happy with the price, location and free parking. On arrival my assessment of the hotel was, whilst a little dated and shabby in areas, quite suitable for our stay and the price paid.

I am not someone who would normally take time to complete a negative review, however, today; I feel I have been forced to.

On the evening of our stay we drank in the bar and were served by a lovely, helpful gentleman but when he went off shift the duties were taken over by the night porter. The night porter totaled up our order (an exact repeat of previous orders) at a much higher price and when challenged in relation to this he refused to listen or review the order and charge made. On taking this up with the duty manager he confirmed the porter was overcharging and we witnessed the manager advising the porter accordingly. Did we receive an apology or acknowledgement of error from the porter? No we just received dirty looks and no refund.

£7.95 per person for breakfast - not bad when you need fuel for the day. Bearing in mind this was a very busy weekend in Brighton; tattoo convention & marathon to mention just two of the events, there was one member of serving staff to be seen. After a 15 minute wait a member of our group had to leave our table to catch the attention of the member of staff to request tea and coffee. Toast was eventually offered, no choice on type of bread and it arrived much later, cold. In terms of the fried breakfast, at no point whilst we were in the dining room were all elements to the breakfast available so there was much waiting around for many of the guests.
A month later I received my credit card bill and noted an unauthorised charge of £26.

On speaking with the hotel I was advised that this was in relation to a missing remote control from my friends’ room and that in their terms and conditions they are authorised to charge my card. I was assured that an email had been sent in relation to this but I had not received one and requested it be resent to my confirmed email address.

Despite numerous emails and phone conversations, initiated by myself and my friend, I have still received no communication in relation to this matter and the explanation of this by the manager is that the member of staff responsible for this error has now been sacked.

My friend did not even turn the TV on during her visit and since when does a remote control cost £26!?!

I have today (15/06/2013) spoken with the Manager who called my friends thieves, would not listen to reason, let alone consider an apology or refund and ended our conversation by telling me to ‘go away and stop wasting his time.’

If you feel Customer Service is important, I advise you steer clear!

While we are pleased with the positive aspects of this review and the acknowledgment of the great value for money Courtlands offers, by equal measure we simply cannot identify with the suggestion of poor custom service and view the comments here as apocryphal, more so as the guest quotes a January stay date

Certainly cheap for Brighton but parking can be an expensive problem.
Room size was ok but toilet bowl was filthy. Needed a really good scrub with disinfectant.
You get what you pay for I suppose but with a bit of control over cleanliness it could be really good

While we appreciate the sentiment regarding the great value for money Courtlands offers, not least as the hotel benefits from having its own car park, by equal measure we were disheartened to read about the concern over the bathroom. Our head housekeeper is one of the best in the business and given her rigorous attention to detail we have not been able to identify with this comment nor is there any log of the matter being raised on check in which would, of course, have resulted in immediate action

The review is therefore like the Curate's Egg, good in part

This was a last minute booking for 2 double rooms. We arrived early about 11am. we were allowed to leave our car in their car park and book in later , which was very good. its a good 30 min walk to the pier and sea life center. The rooms we were given were on the 3rd floor. The rooms were very clean and spacious , with everything you would expect. In the bathroom i was surprised there was no bath mat supplied for inside the bath. The breakfast was served buffet style, it was fine but would of liked it warmer.it was kept warm in heat dishes. the service from the staff was friendly and helpful. On the front of the hotel , it advertises a swimming pool. we saw no signs for it around hotel itself ,on asking we were told it was,nt working at the moment , but didnt find out if this temporary or not.

A lovely Victorian building, and its location made it great for exploring Hove which we wouldn't have thought of doing. It's a fascinating area in its own right full of great and diverse architecture, a lovely park and querky little streets as well as impressive boulevards. Our room was impeccably clean, and had clearly recently been redecorated. Free parking was a real bonus because parking is usually an expensive nightmare around Brighton and Hove. It was great value at £85 the night for the two of us including breakfast. The breakfast was excellent, and the staff welcoming and helpful. On the down side we felt the images on their website were a bit misleading - I suspect they show recently refurbished and upgraded rooms rather than those that might be more typical. We did enjoy our stay - the room was big, it was very quiet (not overlooking the street) and the bed was amazingly comfortable. However, the bath was very small and my wife (who is not exactly huge) had some difficulty getting out, given the way it was jammed up against a wall window with little are for hands and downward pressure. Impressive tap display, but a thin trickle of hot water from bath and washbasin taps. Despite these niggles, it was great value. I'm sure the management are working hard to improve and upgrade it. A tip to management - either water your indoor and outdoor plant displays. Or throw them away! Sadly neglected plants give a poor impression - either initially or on reflection.
