“A hidden gem!”
Review of Market Diner

Market Diner
Ranked #768 of 1,133 Restaurants in Brighton
Price range: $13 - $25
Cuisines: British
Description: Not many places can lay claim to being 'the original home of the Gut Buster' - but then, they don't all come like Market Diner in Brighton. The all-night cafe is a local institution - a favourite among clubbers and lorry-drivers alike, and serves up tummy teasers like steak, eggs, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, peas and chips, along with the legendary Gut Buster: eggs, bacon, mushrooms, burger, black pudding, fried toast, beans, chips and tomatoes. If you've got an appetite that's not easily sated, and you're a fan of the fried breakfast - this is a must-visit for you.

“A hidden gem!”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

This 24 hour cafe is a life saver at 4 in the morning when all that's open anywhere else are kebab shops! It has been responsible for warding off several impending hangovers of mine. You can have everything from a full breakkie or their famous gut buster, a bacon sarnie, chicken & chips, pizzas, burgers, or even spotted dick or apple pie and custard - any time day or night! What's not to like?
I love that it's on a back street, as I think the atmosphere would be a lot different on a main road. I am quite glad that seemingly not everyone knows about it as it's not the sort of place a tourist would stumble upon! Love, love, love!

“A rough diamond.”
Reviewed November 5, 2010

The Market Diner looks unsurprisingly simple from the outside, and it is.
This no-frills cafe offers plain, simple British cafe food in a plain, simple setting.
Don't be fooled by the slighty run-down appearance of Circus Street (especially after dark) - you'll be quite safe. The Market Diner is too well known to be anything other than totally honest - Clubbers, cabbies and coppers all use it throughout the night so there's rarely any trouble.
There's plenty of space to sit down and dine inside too so don't be put off if the counter area is a little crowded. If it's a nice evening, try the bench outside along the front of the cafe, and simply sit and watch the night time street life go by. If you're lucky you might spot urban foxes watching it all from the balcony of the derelict market opposite.
The fayre on offer is nothing special in itself - what makes it special is it's done really well and isn't trying to be something it isn't. Late night burgers are just burgers in a bun, breakfasts are fried egg, bacon, beans and toast, but the lack of pretence is refreshing. Prices reflect this too. You'll struggle to spend over a tenner on a breakfast that'll set you up for the entire day.
This is everything Costa isn't, which is why you should visit. Check opening hours though.....It's aimed more at the nocturnal diner!
