We went there on Boxing Day whilst in Brighton. The food, service and environment were all okay, but nothing special. Not the worst experience, but it's a shame it isn't better - it's in a nice part of town and it was relatively busy.

We were a large party, one of whom is in a wheelchait, the sight of which caused disdain amongst the waiting staff. If we had not been in a large group, we would have walked out there and then.

The service was actually fair, but the food was not! The starters of mushrooms was quite nice, but the main course was overcooked and bland.

Would not go again.

We ate here roughly about 7 years ago on our last trip to Brighton and it was quite pleasing which is why we thought we would venture back.It was a disappointment to say the least. We had the weirdest shaped dough balls I have ever seen to start which came with garlic butter but they must have been aiming for the minimalist approach because there was barely a teaspoon of it.When we were still eating the waitress changed our cutlery and then proceeded to bring the main.We didn't say anything because we were both so shocked! The pizza's were ok given the price but I remember them being bigger. There were about 4-5 busy tables in that night but both the waitresses kept circling like sharks which was quite off putting. Not a pleasurable experience this time sorry.

As an ex-Brightonian Piccolos would not be my choice, there are so many more Italians with a better offer, even in the centre of Brighton. Al Duomo for one. Piccolos was a friend's choice and as they were paying, I did not complain. A nice touch was that we were given a complimentary small pizza to share whilst chosing our food.

I had the mussels which were clearly from a 'ping' bag but they couldn't even get that right. Many were cold. As a main course it was small. It came with garlic bread which was minimalist. The sauce was... indescribable, pink, synthetic gloop with raw celery? V. odd.

Looking at other dishes being served up I would suggest this establishment has many freezers and a busy microwave?

Piccolo's is in a prime location, so it won't fail because it does not depend on repeat business. My advice is, if you can, visit the tapas restaurant. Casa don Carlos, (if you can get a table, which says it all), a little further into the Laines or go to the Black Lion around the corner which does fab food.

Cheap yes......good quality no. Pasta was covered in greasy oil and my colleagues steak was awful. Decided to have dessert but the creme brûlée was frozen in the middle......walk on by!!
