Description: Located on Paston Place in the heart of Kemp Town village, Sam's of Brighton is a stone's throw from the Brighton Pier and the Marina. Sister restaurant to Sam's of Sevendials in the heart of Brighton, this chic and elegant family-owned bistro - with an understated neutral colour scheme, wooden floors and deco-inspired lamps - is popular with a fashionable local crowd. Sam's serves classic yet creative dishes made from the finest seasonal ingredients, and the restaurant's award-winning menu features favourites such as the Shetland rope-grown mussels with spiced coconut, vanilla, and red peppers; roast rabbit loin served with soft polenta and savoy cabbage; and the rice pudding with blood orange for dessert. Sam's also has an excellent selection of both old and new world wines, many available by the glass and carafe. Sam's of Brighton was voted "Runner Up BEST UK NEWCOMER" by the Harden's Guide 2010.

Visited Sam's earlier in the year and not impressed; much more hit than miss, all in all a pretty lacklustre experience. Wouldn't normally do this but since it's local and I'm lazy, thought I would give it another go. Really surprised how much improved it was, with a better menu choice and the food altogether in a different gear; not least a truly memorable soup (so often otherwise a dumping ground for restaurant leftovers). Waiting staff were different, so maybe the chef was too. Altogether an experience so much better than last time, it was difficult to imagine it was the same restaurant. Perhaps I just hit a bad patch previously and all the permanent staff were on holiday then. Anyway it just shows how dangerous it can be to judge a place on one visit and here's hoping a great little local restaurant remains so.

We were pushed for time and found Sam's restaurant just by chance. There was only one other couple there and we were served by a delightful young lady who told us some of the history of the photos that were on the wall. The quality of the food, if not excellent, was certainly very good and we would definitely go back again if in the area. Highly recommended.

Eaten here twice, both times with wife and young child. Cooking is competent but not spectacular, service on both occasions was very friendly if a bit slow. Parking can be problematic but this is Brighton so no great surprise there. Would definitely return if in the area.

Paid a visit to Sam's on Christmas Eve, having only previously been for summer week night special menus. Despite a few tables of families having Christmas special menus, the place did not feel like it had sold out. The atmosphere was festive without being tacky and staff still managed to be professional and attentive. We went a la carte rather than the Christmas special. Both of us enjoyed our starters but the main course was particularly delicious - pan-fried bream with crab cake, cucumber tagliatelle and caviar. One of the better mains I have eaten out in some time. The only compliant was that they were out of vodka for martinis but the gin alternative was excellent. Third visit and definitely not the last.

I really enjoyed Sam's. I have visited before and will keep going back.

The location is a little bit off the beaten track in Kemp Town, just outside the town centre. Luckily for me, I live on the seafront so it was a 5 minute walk from home. I had a pheasant salad starter, followed by a glorious lamb shank. Lovely wine and understated decor. Quick and attentive service.

Reasonably priced too. A winner!
