“Best Seafood Restaurant in Brighton”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

Had a lovely meal in apparently the oldest restaurant in Brighton! Dover sole was delicious so as the oysters and champagne. Service was well presented and very professional. Great atmosphere, classical and timeless decor.

“Delicious.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

Will be returning to this restaurant! Delicious food and wine right in the middle of Brighton. Service was great and not rushed, even though we were there without a booking on a Sunday lunchtime in the middle of July.

It is pricier than a lot of the restaurants in Brighton but worth every penny if you are treating yourself. Will book in advance next time and try to get in for Saturday night... Book ahead if you can as it gets really busy.

“A happy lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

Came here with my father 50+ years ago to be given my first oyster!
We went specially for oysters, & oysters we had - 9 between us, from Loch Fyne & wonderfully fresh, & reasonable size. Nice bread & butter. Then two portions of the hot mixed seafood entree - plenty for a main course - plus chips. Shared a mixed dessert platter [for one], very good choc fondant & sorbet, middling apple pudding & semolina. This is not fashionable gastronomy but very good cooking, each seafood item perfectly done & presented. Nice 50cl of house white, a useful size if one of us is driving. The Red Room with its period decor and wall paintings is delightful, especially if as we did [luck] you get the window table looking in at everyone else. Will not wait another 50 years to return.

“Could have been better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

This was our second visit to English's having had a very nice meal the first time last year. Once again we chose from the set menu - which on the face of it is very good value. However, we were disappointed when we were told that the mussel appetiser was off as they had run out of mussels. Our second choice's were so so. Fish is clearly what this restaurant is all about - so go for it if you eat here. We both had haddock, which was very nice, although it wasn't sourced locally which was a bit strange. Halfway through our main meals, the table next to us was served with bouillabaisse teaming with mussels. When we questioned our waiter, he said that they saved mussels for dishes off the main menu - so they hadn't really run out! We were quite miffed about this which frankly spoiled the latter part of our evening. So I guess that the moral of the story is that if you eat at English's & have your eyes on a particular dish on the set menu, check first that they're willing to serve it!

Dear Fifty-not-out
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. I am sorry that we did not hit the mark on this occasion and we do hope that you give us another try in the future.
As for the mussels - it has been very difficult to source good mussels recently. Due to the fact that we only had a very limited amount available we decided to call off the mussel dish which requires a lot of mussels, thereby retaining the mussels for the various recipe dishes requiring less mussels and in so doing being able to retain more dishes on the menu. I can assure you it was not called off just because we did not want to sell an item on our set menu or that we simply were not willing to sell this item.
Wherever possible we always serve local or ethically sourced products. As with cod, haddock has strictly regulated quotas around British waters so when we are not able to get our haddock locally it comes from well-managed Icelandic, Norwegian and Faroese fisheries.
Kind Regards
Andre
