“Great place for a pre-theatre supper”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

We chose Carluccio's for two reasons - I love Carluccio but more practically it was a short stroll from the Theatre Royal.
The restaurant was looking very festive with red and gold boxes ready for Christmas goodies, I must remember to get down there before Christmas!
Service was prompt, friendly and efficient. The food was very good my friend was very impressed with her seafood salad. My pasta dish was tasty and I've forgotten the name, let alone how to spell it!!
We had an excellent bottle of Gavi and got away well in time for the theatre.
What more can you ask for...

“Mingy portions, basic overpriced food”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

Plus a totally inefficient manager, his role is solely cosmetic, was asked about the tiny portions (6 ravioli in the plate too little even for a toddler) and declared that his was not responsible for the restaurants policy re the quantity of the food served. Which food, to be mentioned, is poor quality and really nothing worth experiencing. When I speak for small partions i mean less than half the standard restaurant size probably the third or even less. Atmosphere not bad, and take away sandwiches etc still overpriced but decent. But avoid at all costs visit the place for lunch or dinner or you will end up having to visit another resaturant to top up....

“inflation within recession”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

Gorgeous place, centrally placed. Food is wonderful but extremely overpriced. A loaf of fairly ordinary (and very small) bread was about £3.00. A place for a treat, methinks.

“Authenticity”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

The food did have the flavour of Italian cuisine. It did not come from 'ready made' packs and appeared to be freshly cooked to order

“Carluccio's Brighton - Terrible Experience”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

This was my third visit (and definitely the last) to Carluccio's in Brighton. It was lunchtime and the restaurant was barely a third full. We sat for 10 minutes before a waitress appeared. She was quite surly and disinterested in taking an order. We ordered drinks (water and a glass of wine) which took quite a while to arrive. We made our order - for starters olives, bread and calamari. The olives and bread were fine. The dunking olive oil very unpleasant indeed. The calamari was probably the worst we have ever tasted, overcooked, dry, and with a pathetic little slice of lemon that had been cut hours beforehand. The waitress asked if everything was ok and I said that the calamari was unacceptable. The restaurant manager appeared, apologised that the chef hadn't cooked it properly and that she wouldn't charge for it. What then followed was little better. Sea bream on a tiny bit of grey mash - awful presentation; sea bream ok but a bit dry, but very unappetising looking plate of beige/grey food, and a seafood salad mainly chicory with ok prawns, mussels and slightly rubbery squid. The bill came to over 40 pounds and was hopeless value for money. The attitude of the staff was appalling apart from the rather apologetic restaurant manager. I could never recommend this restaurant - noisy yes, waiting staff poor (I think depending on who is on), food inconsistent as I did have one meal (a goat's cheese salad) there which was fine - but then something that couldn't really go wrong - and I actually had to apologise to my son for taking him there. Staff training needs to be addressed here, as does the plates that leave the kitchen. I would definitely never go back there given the poor food, even poorer value for money and poor service. This restaurant needs to be aware of the fierce competition of Italian style restaurants in Brighton.
