“Excellent weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2012

We stayed for just one night on a special offer. It's a great location, Alfriston is a lovely little village and the hotel is within a very few minutes walk away. The building is set in lovely grounds (although they were partially under water when we were there) and would be lovely in the summer with several patio areas and excellent views.
The rooms are warm, comfortable and reasonably well equipped though lacking in character (as is the main restaurant). The bar and lounge are also very comfortable.
The food is very good, although vegetable lovers may be disappointed as very few are offered, even as extra side dishes.
In the main, the staff are friendly and helpful. The only exception was the head waiter who was very curt almost to the point of rudeness. I realise that the restaurant was very busy that evening but he rather let the team down and was no different the following morning at breakfast.

Room Tip: Worth paying a little extra for a room with view.

Stayed for my nieces 40th birthday. Room very noisy just above bar although I asked for somewhere quiet. My husband who is 5ft 11in could not sleep at all as bed too short. Room quaint but not practical. Breakfast at 15£ very expensive. Beautiful village and lovely walks.

Room Tip: Ask to e on a higher floor

A warm friendly welcome, attentive friendly staff who made our stay more enjoyable, clean well equipped rooms and a comfy bed. Food in restaurant excellent with ample portions and a varied selection. Restaurant service excellent, breakfast buffet also to a high standard. Will be staying again and recommending to friends and family.

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the last few years and this year, either on holiday as a couple, or on business alone (with and without dogs), in all seasons and in all weathers.(Brighton (45 min), Eastbourne (30 min), Lewes (15 Min). .

If you wish to catch perfection, stay at this hotel in the spring or summer during the week! (It is also great for the rest of the year, but at these times during my stay it seemed as if, what can only be described as, that I received service and an experience fit (I can imagine) for a Persian King!).

Indeed I wondered at the time if I would ever experience anything better!

Feel the warmth of the sun on the dry soil, the spring flowers, the sound of the rooks and experience a rare peace in a beautiful setting.(Ideal for romantic weekends!)

The location is magnificent and your journey in can encompass some of the most beautiful downland views ever: the view of the Downs as you approach down the M-23, catch the Dyke, the Downs behind Brighton, Caburn, Firle Beacon, Beddingham, High and Over.

Alfriston itself is a gem in the heart of the South Downs and the hotel sits on a meander of the Cuckmere river next to village in a place of great tranquility.

The setting is perfect, an elegant old flint faced country house converted into a hotel, yet retaining many of the old characteristics in the bar and function rooms which have a luxurious Sussex country house feel.

The greeting is friendly and the staff ever attentive and kind and understanding.

Catch tea in the lounge by a wood fire in the Inglenook in winter or on the patio overlooking the ancient garden in summer.

The exterior rooms have views of the Downs and all rooms are well appointed to a high standard and very comfortable.

The restaurant is tranquil and elegant and the food is immaculate and pleasant, with good attentive but unobtrusive service. (It was lunch in the restaurant in the spring,at peace and with the sun shining that my experience reached its zenith!)

The pool is of a reasonable size.

The gardens are ancient and idyllic in spring and summer.

Function rooms with impressive vistas are available and weddings can be performed in the garden permanent gazebo.

The grounds lead onto walks on the river bank and via the village green to the South Downs Way.

The walk over the river bridges is a good excursion in all weathers and also leads to the village itself.

The village has several excellent eateries and a well stocked village shop.

Local attractions are:

The Cuckmere Meanders (World Famous) (viewed from the hill above the valley on the main Eastbourne Road).

The view of the seven sisters (undulating chalk cliffs) (from Birling Gap) and also from the west promentory of the mouth of the Cuckmere (another world famous view you will immediately recognise).

Birling Gap beach (sea erosion in action, the lighthouse having to be moved back every 10 years or so).

Firle Beacon (car park).

Charleston Manor House (Home of the Bloomsbury Set (VW, VT, RSW etc) and a must for the ladies).

Lewes (Bills Bistro and The Harveys Brewery Shop).

Brighton Lanes (45 minutes).

Glyndebourne.

Eastbourne (ideal beaches for families).

Jevington (a blue plaque is here for the discovery of Banoffee Pie (roughed up as a dessert when ingredients ran out (as per tikka massala!!).

The long man of Alfriston.

Beachy head.

The Sussex Ox at Milton Street (great pub food and walks).

And many many more scenic downland locations.

A good experience all round!

.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the Downs. Weekdays are the most peaceful.

Stayed at Deans Place 26-28 Nov. Booked a Tzoo offer for two night stay.
It was a pleasure to walk into a warm, open fire, heated bar / lounge area. We ate in the bar on the second evening which was fine, except the bar menu could have had a wider selection.
The restaurant was in a nice room and the food of a good quality. There were many interesting dishes on the menu.
Our room was very pleasant with a view of the (flooded) garden and the surrounding hills. The gardens, with pool, would be lovely in the summer.
As the weather was pretty miserable we actually sat for a few hours in the lounge reading the paper and books - something we wouldn't normally do - plenty of comfy chairs and that open fire again. and it was great.
The whole place was spotlessly clean and well decorated.
The staff were all pleasant and mainly all seemed to know what they were doing, which is unusual these days. The bar staff (Anthony and Megan-sorry for names) both had it just about right. Friendly but getting on with what they had to do.
If I had to pick on something negative, it would be that our waitress couldn't clarify our questions about some of the dishes, due to lack of knowledge and poor English. She was however helpful and enthusiastic and it didn't spoil our evening.

The village of Alfriston is only a couple of minutes walk, is pretty and has three nice looking pubs that serve food.

Room Tip: Watch out for offers!!!!!

Some friends were staying with us and we wanted a delicious Sunday lunch in a comfy restaurant where we could enjoy a good chat.

I found this hotel on trip advisor and was attracted by the excellent reviews. The dining room is semi formal with white tablecloths and the service was truly excellent- friendly and attentive. The menu was varied, the food home cooked and fresh and even came with coffee and truffles which we ate in the lounge area on sofas in front of a roaring fire- very cosy on what was a dismal rainy day!

Alfriston has lots of little interesting shops and art galleries and is a brilliant starting point for walks over the downs or along the river to the sea

We shall certainly return in the summer to walk, sit in the garden and to try out the cream tea which we caught a tantalising glimpse of whilst we were there- yes, there was lots of clotted cream!!

I can't praise this place highly enough!
