We were on our way home and as we were passing Thetford Forest Centre decided we would 'pop in.' It wasn't until we were well up the drive that we saw the prices and, at that point we couldn't really turn around as the road was narrow. Must admit I was quite annoyed at having to pay £11 for the car especially as we weren't going to be there long. We did park up -lots of parking spaces at least and found the cafe which didn't have the best choice of food but what they had was OK. There were loads of families there so it was noisy and crowded so we headed off for one of the forest trails. They were pleasant enough but having walked in equally good forests for free and without all the noise from all the families there it did grate a little. I can understand the price for the amenities for the children but as a pensioner - and a severely disabled one at that - I did not appreciate having to pay a grossly inflated price for a short amble in the forest.

As forest bike trails go, Thetford is great for family rides. With a dedicated 'skills track' which my 4yr old loves on his balance bike there's something for everyone, plus a couple of playgrounds and at least one Geocache to be found.

We had an absolute fantastic day out. We arrived at high lodge and at first 11 pounds for the day seemed quite pricey. But it was worth every penny. We have 3 boys aged 12,8 and 5, and our dog. There was so much to do for them. Lots of different play areas to play on it seemed everywhere we walked there was more and more for them to do. Lovely 3 mile walks. Next time we will take the bikes although there is a bike hire shop there. Nice cafe and toilets and Go ape. So our day out cost an ice cream and parking. A cheap fun packed day out.

We turned around at the gate when we saw the cost of £11.00 . We can recommend the site in Brandon where parking is 70p all day. Cafe, gardens forest bike and walking trails.

Clearly the privatisation of the Forestry Commission has started.
