We travelled to Thetford forest for a day out while staying with friends in Cambridge. We drove from Cambridge putting the following postcode into sat-nav "IP27 0AF". Thought there was something not quite right when the sat-nav mentioned something about restricted roads. When we neared the destination it took us to a road where there was a barrier blocking progress. However there was a small carpark and given we were already within the forest boundary we decided to just park up there and begin our walk. The point of mentioning this is just to highlight that if you use sat-nav and use the Forestry Commission's suggested postcode for the visitor centre you may end up in the same predicament as we did.

However once we began our walk it was all flat and we only added about 1.5-2km onto the walk before we reached the visitor centre. We then did the Fir Trail walk all around the forest which was a flat and level 3km.

We took our bikes and a bored 11 year old to Thetford Forest in the hope that leaving his games console behind wouldn't be too much of a wrench!
We found the staff to be very helpful and informative along with the info boards displaying cycle routes and level of difficulty, we chose the easiest route which gave us the option of either a 3 or 5 mile route with flat stone to grass tracks, there were no hills just slight inclines every so often which makes it suitable for any age or ability, the route was marked out perfectly leaving no doubt where to go at each junction.
After the bike ride we locked our bikes and headed for the adventure play area which provides good fun for all ages, as it was early in the school holidays it was busy but still ok.
The activities offered by Go ape are a little expensive in our opinion and would have to be a special treat for us to participate, for example you can hire a segway for 1 hour and take a pre planned route through the woods but it sets you back £25 per person.
There is lots of parking and a whole day's parking is £10 or about £1.80 an hour but we found this totally acceptable considering you can make this your only outlay and spend the day with the kids having fun.

I have been to Thetford Forest Park/High Lodge more times than I can count, and I worked as a volunteer ranger there for 7 months. I'm not sure who the terrible review below is for, as Thetford Forest doesn't even allow camping. There is fantastic play equipment for the kids, a great sound maze, and miles of hiking and biking trails. A lot if energy is invested in keeping the park in good condition for guests. There is a restaurant and gift shoppe, bike hire, BBQ hire, segway tours, and High Lodge also sponsors Battlefield Live and Go Ape tree top adventure. They have wonderful events throughout the year for the family including the Electric Forest and Christmas festivities. Thetford forest is a wonderful place to take the whole family, including the dog!

Living so close to the forest has its perks, We jump on our bikes and cycle through the forest trails (colour co-ordinated for easy thru hard routes) If you dont have a bike you are able to hire them from the cycle shop for a fee. There are lots of activites to keep you entertained from Go Ape! to the off road segways. We always find the concerts entertaining, this year we are off to Ed Sheeran! The cafe is basic, and can be expensive so we normally take a picnic and end up treating ourselves to ice creams from the chiller. A great day out from couples to families and pets!

Just come back from a day trip to Thetford Forest Park. Park is good and lots of parking. Found it hard to find the Forest walk paths the maps were confusing and the start points were not clear. The catering was not good. Food choice was poor. We went for the scones and threw them away as all were stale ugh! I think you would improve your takings if you changed the caterers! After reading how much it cost to run the site perhaps this is were you need to look for improvement. We also went to the Fairhaven gardens, catering was fantastic. Everything looked good and tasted good. Perhaps leaving your scones on top of the hot servery is not a good idea.
