If you are looking for that special place to impress your loved one and want luxury then read the reviews before you go so you are under no illusion.I booked this as a treat but was greatly disappointed. I can imagine that back in the 60's and 70' and earlier The Grand was the hotel for the discerning. Sadly i have to agree with the other reviewers. There is a limit to how long you can keep dressing up the past. Once the owners realise this and start charging suitable prices relevant to the quality then we will be assured what we are getting. The advertising material is misleading and overstated. Even at £50.00 special offer i still feel it was overpriced. I too would have walked out if i was paying anymore. Thats probably why they take a non refundable deposit.
Single? then you will probably be put in the smallest room on the 3rd floor I've ever seen, you hit your head when standing up to try and see the sea view which is obscured by the hotel name sign, thats after the pidgeons move from their nesting place.
Twin 2nd floor sea view very dated, lovely view but uncomfortable bed and cold. Double 1st floor over entrance - noisy and pokey.
The radiators went off at night. Woke up shivering. The hot water was cold in the morning.
Breakfast 1st class, good choice and tasty, service with a smile. Lovely view. Bar areas refurbished and lovely conservatory to look out across the bay. You will struggle to find a carpark space at busy times and have to walk some distance. Appears the staff have priority. The staff however are the best asset to this hotel. Indoor plunge pool and spa and gym adequate for a quick dip but not for relaxing or indulging. A seaside Hotel suitable for those with young family as own beach access. Hopefully with the income from the sale of the new beach huts this hotel will get its badly needed refurbishment.

Room Tip: If you have facilities preferences then best to ask in advance and pay the upgrade price as i couldn...

There are problems but also great points, that have been mentioned in other reviews. We booked via the internet and were getting a good price so that colours our judgement somewhat! The hotel is most certainly warm and welcoming, our bed and room was comfortable and clean, the heating works and the hot water is hot! The bar conservatory eating and drinking is very good. The views are wonderful. The bathroom was dated. I appreciate, as cheap internet bookers, we were up the top in the cheaper rooms but "wifi hit and miss up there" actually means "there is no wifi" (3rd floor) but it was OK in the lounge area which was very pleasant. The restaurant is clean and well served but is very mediocre food wise. This is a shame as it could be so much better and this would lift the hotel. Parking limited as has been said, but the staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our stay. There is a plunge pool and leisure stuff downstairs too but we didn't try it

Room Tip: Avoid 3rd floor if possible (especially if you want wifi). Eat out in the evening, lunch in conserva...

The hotel name and website pictures overstate what should be expected.
Our room on the third floor had a comfortable mattress on the bed, but an ensuite where, if you are tall, the sloping ceiling left little space to stand up, the hot water took several minutes to come through, the shower trickled, and the towel rail was cold.
The bar area and conservatory seemed welcoming to families, but if you want a quiet meal or drink it would be best to go somewhere else. The conservatory radiators were all switched off (in December!), The staff were pleasant enough, but over-stretched.
The restaurant and breakfast services were good. We had a good walk to Old Harry's Rocks from the hotel, and day out to Tyneham/Kimmeridge.
Would we go back there? To the coastline yes, but to the hotel, no.

Room Tip: not 3rd floor

Stayed one night on a visit for a funeral in Swanage. Overpriced (£130 per night) and shabby, in desperate need of money spent to bring it into line with this century! Our bed had the cheapest mattress which was lumpy, there was a similarly cheap and not very warm duvet cover, all resulting in a sleepless night.

The bathroom tiling is floor to ceiling and looked ancient. It was in need of a proper clean, with water and soap marks clearly visible. The taps needed a wrench to turn on and off, and I very nearly couldn't turn off the hot tap. A dribble came out of the shower, you would get more water pressure from standing outside in the rain!

On searching for a suitable socket in our bedroom the only one I could find was down behind the bedside cabinet. Wish I hadn't looked - area behind bed had not been cleaned in a long time.

The juddering lift should have been in a museum! It was so tiny it only just held my husband and myself plus a very small overnight bag. It was also filthy with fingermarks and other dirt all over the doors and walls.

Breakfast was just about OK, but fresh fruit salad does not consist of all apple, and the bread used for toast was like cardboard.

Overall, this hotel is basking in their prime position overlooking Swanage Bay. The situation is lovely, but they need to concentrate on some basic principles, in particular cleanliness, and because of the shabby décor, alter the high prices accordingly.

Interestingly enough, the hotel was far from full, with breakfast set for only 7 couples.

Called in for late meal on a busy Saturday evening and had excellent food and the warmest of welcomes at reception and with restaurant service! Staff are friendly, professional and happy to see their guests. We were so impressed with quality of food, atmosphere and service that we decided to book in for the night and returned to check out of the hotel where we were staying and were not having good service at all! Rooms in the Grand were clean and comfortable and breakfast and coffee later on terrace could not have been more pleasant. Sea view was delightful! This hotel really wants guests to have a good time and this now will be our absolute first choice when we return to Swanage .

Room Tip: See view rooms would be lovely I should imagine!

Lindsay and the team deserve a gold star for putting on the most amazing day for our wedding!!!! We got married 30th November 2013... we had been planning its for nearlly 2 years and had meeting every few months with Lindsay, the general manager, for updates. Lindsay take a hands on role on the day, she was there start to finish making sure every thing was perfect. Also included was the toast master which keep every one in check and is good fun too. The setting is wonderful we have some beautiful pictures and memories we will cherish for ever. The food was very very good to. Every thing was hot and fresh when it came out which is not easy with 80 3 course meals. The quality and attention to detail was too knotch.
We had a friend decorate the room who did a beautiful job but all the staff were very helpful and efficiant. The evening buffett was lovely and plentyful for our 200 evening guests. Every one had a wonderful time and no moans.
Prices at the bar are far, what you would expect from a hotel and our room was lovely and spacous over looking the bay.
Nothing was too much trouble Lindsay was even on hand with a needle and thread when my dress tor in the evening and she stiched me in :)
Thank again to Lindsay and all the staff for making our day PERFECT!!!

Room Tip: ask for a sea view amazing!

Stayed for 2 nights excellent hotel ,car parking a bit tight,Very nice sea view ,room clean and a fair size, with a good sea view ,we had a problem as it was wet while we where there it was raining most of the time and there was a leek off the gutter onto the conservatory roof and it sounded like a Drum being played all the time. Other than that it was a very nice stay [Hope they get it fixed for Christmas 2013]

Room Tip: Pick the second floor for the best view from a sea view room
