Grand Hotel Swanage

I would agree with a lot of other reviews in saying that the Grand Hotel is not quite as "grand" as it obviously was . The decor does look rather tired and tatty in places but that said it did not detract from the enjoyment of our stay. The room we had did have a spectacular sea view and it was comfortable and clean. The dinner we had which was included in the package was good and the breakfast good with plenty of choice. However, the prices in the restaurant were prohibitive enough to ensure that we had our second evening meal in the bar where the prices are reasonable.
Overall I would recommend the hotel to others . We met the general manager who was, like all the other staff, very pleasant and professional. I would suggest however that a priority is made of renewing misted double glazing in the restaurant. There is not a lot of point in being able to boast of a restaurant with spectacular sea views when guests are struggling to see through condensation in the double glazed "picture" windows.

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea view are a must.

Our stay at the Grand Hotel Swanage was very pleasant, we had a lovely sea view room. The staff were all very nice and helpful. We would be very happy to return to the Hotel in the future and would book a sea view room.

Room Tip: If you can afford a sea view room it is well worth it

We returned to The Grand after 20 years, taking advantage of a Living Social deal. The only sea view room available was a twin bedded room on the 1st floor. The views were stunning and the room was clean, but the bathroom is very dated and only just passable.I found the louvre doors to the bathroom were not really ideal as they did not shut properly. When sitting on the toilet ,the toilet roll holder is behind you and up high - almost impossible to reach. The mattresses were awful - every time you rolled over there was a concerto of springs boinging and if you got too near the edge it nearly turfed you off onto the floor.
The evening meal , which was included in the offer was a disappointment. We have dined here before and were really looking forward to dining here again. The dining room was freezing - I mean freezing - apparently the heating was on full blast - and I am not disputing that ,but I reckon it had only been turned on for the evening service. The House Red ( Merlot ) was divine (£16.95 ) - I am suprised they had not mentioned on the wine list that it had a silver award. The starters were limited - there was only one that my husband would have - and he is not fussy. We opted to pay a £4.50 supplement each for the Rib eye steak ( £21.95 on the menu). Our steaks were meant to be medium rare ,but arrived well done and were very thin. We complained and they were replaced without fuss. The replacement steaks were better - cooked medium rare ,but were not as good as pub "2 for a tenner steaks" !! The sauted potatoes were overcooked new potatoes deep fried - not good. Desert was ok - but nothing to write home about. It really put us off dining in there in the future. Breakfast was ok - what you should expect , but the one complaint would be that the sausages are pork & leek, which are not to everyones taste - or at least at breakfast.Poached eggs were excellent - as was the fried bread and tomato.
The second evening we enquired if there was a discount for resident diners on the second night - and as there was not we chose to visit the local pub The Crows Nest for a curry and a pint (£7.99 each ).
I am suprised that The Grand made no effort to hang on to residents by giving an incentive to spend their money at the hotel - and not elsewhere. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the ambience is good. If you want a relaxing break with outstanding views then I would recommend you go, but avoid the steak.

Room Tip: Floors are very very creaky - try and get a top floor room as we were disturbed for 45 minutes until...

Our room was small but perfectly comfortable with lovely sea views.
The food in the restaurant was lovely, with some interesting dishes.
The bar menu was much cheaper but also excellent value for money.
Very easy walk into Swanage.
Bus stop at end of road to Bournemouth, using the chain ferry. Probably best bus route I have ever been on.

Room Tip: Corner room (317) on floor three has very sloping ceilings - a head banger! We changed to a lovely r...

We had a lovely long weekend break here, this hotel is in a lovely position, only a five minute walk to the beach. The room was large and comfortable but the bathroom was tiny and in need of some updating. The staff were a credit, all friendly and helpful but I feel they were let down by the quality of the food. The breakfast was excellent on both mornings. The evening meal, however on the first evening of our stay was poor. We paid a supplement to have the steak but it was not worth it. The saute-type potatoes had obviously been cooked and kept warm and were rather greasy. The salad starters were just about ok. Luckily, we did not book a meal for the second night and found a lovely little bistro just around the corner (The Bull & Boat) where the food was excellent. There were quite a number of hotel guests from the previous evening eating there too, which speaks for itself! All-in-all, I would recommend the hotel for B&B but not for dinner

The room was big and comfortable. We have stayed previously and, as then, we had some problem with the room temperature, it was rather hot and we had to keep windows open. The bathroom was rather dated and needs some work to get to modern standards. The shower was difficult to get to stay on a good temperature and the loo was very bad at flushing.
Breakfast is very good.

We were delighted with the friendly staff, very good food and (luckily) good weather, whilst the rest of Britain was freezing!

Our only annoyances were that :
- the showers (two rooms on the third floor) were of intermittent water strength and would turn from cold to hot and vice-versa without warning. This is something that should be looked at;
- the water drips from (broken?) roof gulleys/rain-water pipes were so loud that sitting in the enclosed veranda was a bit like chinese torture. Such a shame as some careful repair or maintenance could so easily sort out the problem. But this latter is a minor complaint (as one could move into the main lounge).

Excellent value via Living Social. We're sure to return.
