“A good traditional pub based hotel”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

I was booked into this establishment by the institution I was visiting in Sherborne for a one night stay. It is part of a chain of pub/hotel hybrids run by the Marstons brewery chain. The car park is a pay&display situated at the rear of the premises and accessed via a lane to the right hand side of the building. If you are staying at the hotel you do not need to display a ticket but you must give your registration number to the receptionist when you check in.

The hotel itself is situated in the centre of the historic town close to a few restaurants and next door to another pub, the Three Plumes (see separate review). Although my room was a single, it had plenty of space with a sizeable en suite bathroom. The radiator in the main room was built into the fittings and in accessible and the one in the bathroom had no knobs to turn it down with so I reverted to the (rather wasteful) temperature control method of opening the windows.

The plumbing in the building is probably fairly old and the cold water tap in the sink produced a sound that Dizzy Gillespie would have been proud of.

The breakfast - and it was nice to see breakfast included in the room price - was good quality.

All in all, for £37 it was cheaper than I normally pay for a night in a plastic travelodge clone type hotel and I would certainly stay there again.

I like too much the town and therefore I found the hotel fantastic because when you exit you find deeply in the heart of the city. The rooms are clean and confortable. Taste the beers of the below pub.

First night I stayed there there were pubes and leg hair all over the sheets. The people working there responded quite quickly and offered that night free. In the room that I stayed in, there was no heater. They did provide a portable heater but that had to be switched off at night as I didn't want burn the place down. The bed had a MASSIVE dip in it as if 1000 people had sex on it and created a dent.

The plus side is that it only cost £35 pounds a night... The breakfast in the morning was not too bad. Good way to start the day. Even though the breakfast dining room is located in the pub, it does not smell of stale alcohol in the morning.

When you are paying only £35 per night (including breakfast!!), it’s difficult to fault the hotel!

There were a few bad points: the room had a few maintenance problems and was too hot, which meant that we had to have the window open at night. However, there was noise from the street outside as late as 3am - and the bells at Sherborne Abbey chime every 15 minutes all night long. This is not the hotel’s fault, obviously!

Having said that, The Half Moon is a really nice pub - it’s full of character, the staff are really friendly, the breakfast was superb and the room rate was truly amazing!!

I would stay again but I would ask for a room on the top floor at the back of the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor at the back of the hotel.

Booked a suite room for just £60 - should have realised something was wrong when I entered the room which was freezing and found a plug in radiator. Informed reception and told that the room heating was not working and additional stand alone heaters delivered - £20 reduction offered and staff informed me that this was the norm for room 9! - en suite mouldy on the ceilings and shower grouting - staff very pleasant but Marstons should be able to get it right - shame

We stayed just after Christmas for three nights. Arrived just after 2 pm, no one at reception to greet us, went into bar and was soon attended to. We had a very comfortable room on the second floor at the front and the bathroom was so large. When we booked the room we were advised that it could be noisy but we heard no noise at all. On the first night we had a very nice meal at very reasonable prices and the breakfast was very good as well. All meals were hot and well presented. We will certainly stay there again when we visit family - fully recommend.
