“We really enjoyed our stay here.....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2011

I really cannot relate to those negative reviews of this hotel on here, as we have had nothing but good service from the staff, clean, and nice rooms, and decent food! We booked two nights for a friend's birthday (two couples) and Juanita Kirk, the new Manager, was SO nice and helpful, (and what a marvellous change from the usual apathetic mood of so many people these days!) We had a couple of requests regarding rooms, which she was happy to honour, and on arrival we were all made to feel very welcome....Our rooms were very nice, bathrooms immaculately clean, towels and linen pristine! Flat-screen tvs, plenty of power points, informative leaflets, menus etc - nothing wrong at all with accommodation. Maybe we're 'easily pleased,' but as seasoned travellers, we do know what's good and bad. And this is all good. We ate in the restaurant on both evenings, and enjoyed everything we had. Portions are more than adequate, nicely presented, and tasty. As for staff, well Juanita and her staff were great! They even presented our friend's dessert with lit candles, as a birthday surprise! Kind thought!
I'm so aware that these reviews can make or break an hotel, so please try this place before you write it off! We loved it, and as we have been here many times before (and knew various Managers) in past years, we think it is so improved that we shall certainly keep coming back again! Okay it's not The Ritz, The Grosvenor, The Savoy, nor even Claridges, but it IS value for money, and if you want to feel special - meet Juanita and her staff - who will certainly oblige!

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, then maybe you should seek a room at the rear of the hotel, as the Abbey...

The rooms are of a reasonable size, clean, and well furnished in a mildly institutional way. The decoration is a bit slap dash and there was a damp stain in my bathroom. Being on the first floor at the front there was a lot of noise from those drinking on the patio in front of the hotel that a closed window did not mitigate. This disturbance stopped at midnight. You do also hear the chimes of the nearby Abbey. Reception is basically a stairwell and access to the rooms is by a set of steep stairs. The staff are helpful and friendly. As others have pointed out the food is poor although the breakfast is passable. The bar is pleasant, and the beer choice is good.

A little more effort on the decoration, noise insulation, and food would make the Half Moon so much better.

Whilst visiting Sherborne Abbey we noticed the Half Moon Inn across the road, as it was raining hard we decided to go in rather than look for another restaurant as we were hungry and wet. We ordered soup and a main meal at the bar and sat down to wait for our meal. We found the bar staff had an attitude problem and couldnt car less if we ate there or not, the customer service was non existant. We could not believe it when the soup arrived, it was supposed to be Potato and Leek but looked more like porridge, it stuck to the spoon and tasted like wallpaper paste. I can honestly say that in all my life I have never been served such disgusting soup. We called the waitress over, returned the soup and got a full refund on the meal as we did not wish to experience the main meal if the soup was so poor. We then got up and left. We noticed that a lot of food was left uneated by other customers.

My husband and I visited Sherborne on a rare Sunday out, we parked in the town centre and thought the Half Moon looked nice for lunch. The pub is a typical English pub, quite nice inside and good beer! Not so the sunday roast, My husband had to return his straight away as it was cold, the second one was not much hotter, the meat was very thickly slices and very dry as if it had been sliced hours ago, veg was ok but could have been hotter, the gravy was horrible, very watery and had a weird synthetic taste like mouthwash!! Has we not been so hungry we would have left it all ! I suppose at £6.95 you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Dont order the roast!

I have used this hotel on several occasions over the last few years and have had several complaints. However, the new management seem to be making an effort to turn the place around.
The staff were very professional and very helpful. The rooms are more than adequate with a nice array of biscuits, coffee, tea, chocolate and bottled water a very nice touch. The water pressure as always, is excellent filling a good large bath in an astonishingly short time.
Did not try the evening menus, as the local restaurants (The Green) are to die for, however, I am sure that the food is acceptable given the number of patrons.
Breakfast was very good, for what it is with an array of yoghurt's, cereals, fresh fruit and toast to be chosen from via self service and cooked breakfast to order.
Excellent central position makes this a definite option for a stay in Sherborne.

Room Tip: All good but ones at front tend to be more noisey.

Our room was o.k., small, but clean as was the bathroom, it was the rest of the pub that was the problem, the food we had was not very good, everything seemed a bit grubby and when one of the kitchen staff came into the bar carrying a tea towel, which was to say the least a very unfashionable shade of grubby, that really made me wish we had stayed somewhere else. Breakfast the following morning was just about passable, but the memory of the tea towel put me off and the coffee was undrinkable.

Check in was easy, and our room was pleasant and clean . Fairly big bathroom with amazing water pressure. Prefer king size bed but slept reasonably well.
Breakfast was pretty good, although staff are over-stretched which meant we were waiting a long time for some items. Also on our 2nd morning there was a very loud smelly hoover going in the bar near the breakfast area which I felt could have been done after breakfast was over. Staff are polite and helpful and a couple of minor service issues were quickly and personally dealt with. You would be pushed to find better value for money in Sherborne and it has a car park, which is handy given it's central location. We did eat there in the evening and the food was reasonable for the price.
