Whilst visiting Sherborne Abbey we noticed the Half Moon Inn across the road, as it was raining hard we decided to go in rather than look for another restaurant as we were hungry and wet. We ordered soup and a main meal at the bar and sat down to wait for our meal. We found the bar staff had an attitude problem and couldnt car less if we ate there or not, the customer service was non existant. We could not believe it when the soup arrived, it was supposed to be Potato and Leek but looked more like porridge, it stuck to the spoon and tasted like wallpaper paste. I can honestly say that in all my life I have never been served such disgusting soup. We called the waitress over, returned the soup and got a full refund on the meal as we did not wish to experience the main meal if the soup was so poor. We then got up and left. We noticed that a lot of food was left uneated by other customers.

My husband and I visited Sherborne on a rare Sunday out, we parked in the town centre and thought the Half Moon looked nice for lunch. The pub is a typical English pub, quite nice inside and good beer! Not so the sunday roast, My husband had to return his straight away as it was cold, the second one was not much hotter, the meat was very thickly slices and very dry as if it had been sliced hours ago, veg was ok but could have been hotter, the gravy was horrible, very watery and had a weird synthetic taste like mouthwash!! Has we not been so hungry we would have left it all ! I suppose at £6.95 you get what you pay for.

I have used this hotel on several occasions over the last few years and have had several complaints. However, the new management seem to be making an effort to turn the place around.
The staff were very professional and very helpful. The rooms are more than adequate with a nice array of biscuits, coffee, tea, chocolate and bottled water a very nice touch. The water pressure as always, is excellent filling a good large bath in an astonishingly short time.
Did not try the evening menus, as the local restaurants (The Green) are to die for, however, I am sure that the food is acceptable given the number of patrons.
Breakfast was very good, for what it is with an array of yoghurt's, cereals, fresh fruit and toast to be chosen from via self service and cooked breakfast to order.
Excellent central position makes this a definite option for a stay in Sherborne.
