Owner description: Originally a 12th century fortified bishop's palace which was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh and later became a powerful Civil War Royalist base. It fell to Parliament after a fierce 11 day siege. Now a romantic ruin and home to a great range of wildlife, birds and plants. A perfect picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

It has a romantic feel to it - I often see it from the train and at night it looks very gothic. To be honest, there's not that much to see but kids seem to enjoy running around the grounds and entrenched defences. This was a proper castle once but the roundheads probably put paid to that. Corfe castle is better. Fairly pricy for what's on offer, but if you are in Sherborne why not? The new Sherborne 'castle' (more a stately home) is less romantic but has much more to see.

The tall ruins have plaques with a little information on the castle and its rooms once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh who was removed for treason. Unfortunately, Oliver Cromwell's army destroyed it during the English Civil War in the mid-17th century so you have to use your imagination as to what it must have looked like during its heyday.

Interesting to wander around. English Heritage site. Small shop for icecreams etc. Easy parking next to castle.

Don't go here if you expect to be spoon fed heritage and nauseated by tedious "visitor engagement". What a breathe of fresh air, unspoilt tranquil haven on the outskirts of Sherborne. And, you get the opportunity to think for yourself and just imagine - a rare pleasure these days. Only downside was that the interpretation panels needed refreshing and cleaning - obviously have some very excitable birds in the area......

I had two visits just to enjoy the location and the fact that it was never crowded. You could sense the history and it is beautiful just to wander round for an hour or two.
