Owner description: Originally a 12th century fortified bishop's palace which was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh and later became a powerful Civil War Royalist base. It fell to Parliament after a fierce 11 day siege. Now a romantic ruin and home to a great range of wildlife, birds and plants. A perfect picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

“The Sherborne Old Castle”

I had two visits just to enjoy the location and the fact that it was never crowded. You could sense the history and it is beautiful just to wander round for an hour or two.

“Old Castle in Sherborne”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

The sister site to the "new" castle, this was also worth a visit. Largely in ruins, there is regrettably not much left to see, and you have to use your imagination somewhat. But it is definitely steeped in history and worth spending an hour. We visited on a glorious sunny day, which made it all the more pleasant. Pretty views of the surrounding area.

Just outside the gate is Castleton Church. It is also worth stopping to take a look inside, very old and charming.

“The original Castle.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

Abandoned by Rayleigh when he decided to build the new castle next door, not much now remains of the building. Various plaques help visualize how it was, interesting for history buffs but the newer house next door is the one to go to.

“Sherborne Rubble”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

Let's be honest it's a pile of rubble said to be a castle. For the price it isn't worth a visit. The old stories say that it was knocked about in the Civil War, when it reality it's been plundered for it's stone over many moonlit nights
