Owner description: Originally a 12th century fortified bishop's palace which was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh and later became a powerful Civil War Royalist base. It fell to Parliament after a fierce 11 day siege. Now a romantic ruin and home to a great range of wildlife, birds and plants. A perfect picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

“Great castle ruins”

These wonderful castle ruins are great to wander around. Everyone I've taken there has always been really impressed. It's not large but never busy and a lot of fun.

“Ruins of a 12th century castle”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

The old Sherborne castle was built in the 12th century as the fortified palace of Roger de Caen, Bishop of Salisbury and Chancellor of England. Although comparatively little survives of Sherborne Old Castle's walls, the layout of the remaining walls actually make it easier to visualise the castle in its heyday.

“Sorry about the damage!”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

A wonderful romantic ruin with lovely views which the grandchildren really enjoyed - but sadly we have to admit an ancestor captured and demolished it in the 17th century! Whoops!

“Very nice ruins of the castle”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

It was not far from the castle and really worth to go for a walk and see the area. The nature is stunning and in this peaceful area you can see all kinds of birds, fish etc.
