Owner description: Originally a 12th century fortified bishop's palace which was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh and later became a powerful Civil War Royalist base. It fell to Parliament after a fierce 11 day siege. Now a romantic ruin and home to a great range of wildlife, birds and plants. A perfect picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Didn't like portaloos and EH's membership marketing whenever you visit anywhere of theirs. Good views of the surrounding countryside.

A very interesting location in a very peaceful setting. Hard to imagine how people lived in such an early era. Well worth a visit but perhaps a good idea to go early before it gets too busy. You can then visit the new Sherborne Castle to compare.

At £3.95 entry to the old Castle this was reasonable. LOvely place for a picnic. Well presented and clean lawn areas. Kids love to run around the ruins.

As members of English Heritage (well worth it as it encourages us to get out and about!) we often call in places like this on our travels - they are free to enter for members. There isn't a huge amount left of this castle but what there is is well labelled, presented and looked after. There was almost no one else there and we were able to wander round the site, walk the moat and look at the new castle in the distance. As usual, the EH staff were helpful and chatty.

It was worth a visit but a little overpriced and perhaps we would have enjoyed it more if we had had better weather because it is a windy old place. If you like this sort of sight join English Heritage yearly subscription to get better value for your money.
