“Unfailingly high standard”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

The Fontmell rarely disappoints and can be relied upon for high culinary standards and a special touch to its menus. The staff are cheerful and welcoming and the dining room is really rather special too thanks to the proximity of the old mill stream and its distinctive decor. The wine list is interesting and priced realistically. We last went to celebrate the New Year with friends. We enjoyed a well considered and unusual menu with each course themed to a particular part of the UK - venison from Scotland, lamb from Wales and so on. The meal was nicely served at the right pace to ensure a memorable occasion. Strongly recommended. Its reputation tends to make it a popular destination, especially at weekends, so booking is sensible.

“Thoroughly enjoyable.”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

Three of us were very lucky to have visited last week and had one of the best and most inventive dinners which we have had in ages. All of us spoke about this during the meal and agreed to return.
As a starter I had the Smoked Salmon Custard which turned out to be an extravaganza of a starter, genuinely one of the most enjoyable I have had for a long time. This was followed by Fritto Misto of Seafood which was also excellent. Very spoiling!
All in all we had a really inventive meal with lots of thought put into it and care given in producing it.
There were several attentive and helpful members of staff in place and it helped make the evening a delight.
One of my most favourite places to visit and I look forward to our next visit.

“Lovely food .........”
Reviewed January 19, 2014 via mobile

A tastefully decorated pub set in beautiful countryside. Quaint features with stream running through building, comfortable seating area's in bar whilst you peruse the simple yet intriguing menu. We would recommend any of the locally caught fish options. However, on the downside, although our initial order arrived promptly we were left seated with empty plates for half an hour, we were not offered any drinks or a wine menu during our meal. When our plates were eventually cleared, we asked for a desert menu, which did not arrive for another 15 minutes. By which time our disappointment had replaced the desire for desert and coffee. As a couple we were left with a resounding feeling that we had been forgotten (and maybe we weren't viewed as important as we were not spending as much as other tables). Lovely food, poor service. The waiting staff were very pleasant, but just rarely seen!

“Low Key”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

My wife and I popped in for lunch after a walk. The outward appearance of the Fontmell is a little low key, so we weren’t sure whether it was a pub or a restaurant initially. On peering through the window though we ascertained it was a sort of pub that was mainly a restaurant, or that was our impression anyway. On entering we were greeted by a friendly member of staff and offered a table pleasantly situated by a window literally over the stream. The menu was not extensive; however we were able to find something to our taste. My wife ordered the battered fish, substituting the peas and chips for salad. I ordered the Hereford beef burger with bacon cheese and chips. We both felt it was a little on the pricy side, although the décor and feel of the place was pleasing enough. Our meals arrive, mine on an intriguing wooden platter, looking very appetising and indeed it was good. My wife however, felt her fish could have been drained better before serving, as it was quite greasy and the salad was extremely disappointing for the price. We did point this out to a member of staff and on requesting a little more salad a dish of chopped tomato and a dish of chopped onion were brought. To be fair though, the complaint was recognised and on paying the bill they offered the beverages on the house.

Ate well, food was tasty and plentiful. The menu was varied and some original dishes available. Five of us ate and everyone was impressed.
