A well-loved, well-worn cottage in the center of Dorset agricultural countryside. Clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. Cook's kitchen, well-supplied with equipment (except no microwave.) Nearby Udder Farm Store supplies wonderful ingredients for cooking at home and prepared meals for non-cooks. Washer and outside line to dry. Thousands of books on wide ranging subjects to satisfy every reader's interest. Extensive music collection, from The Clash to sacred music. Interesting art and ephemera throughout the house, collected on owner's travels around the world. The owner provided excellent maps and very helpful personal travel reviews of local attractions. Central location for holiday activities for all ages: our 3-generation family enjoyed fossil hunting at Lyme Regis and Charmouth; ancient history at Stonehenge and Avebury; country homes and gardens at Stourhead and animals at Longleat; walking in the beautiful Dorset countryside. Friendly neighbors on either side of the cottage.
I was searching for a rural peacefulness following a bereavement. I could not have found a better destination with a bench at the end of the garden for thinking time. Thank you Stanley for sharing your home...warm, welcoming and full of mutual friends ( your books and music ).
A writers holt in deepest Dorset. Warm, well equipped, great dining area and kitchen. Good walks down to the river Stour. Books galore and quiet corners to read them in. Many thanks, we thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas stay!
We had very cold bleak damp weather for our stay, but we were more than happy to spend hours relaxing in the cottage. Has a lovely calm peaceful feel. There are quiet corners to curl up with a book, we could not believe our eyes when we arrived to see the choice of reading!!! There is a light and airy kitchen dining room, the kitchen very well equipped. We didn't walk as much as planned, because of the weather, and the off road routes were too wet. Both Shaftesbury and Sherbourne offer good days out, interesting towns with all the shops one needs. Superb farm shop a couple of miles away too. On the last day the sun shone and we discovered the garden bench, with Dorset spread before us! We can highly recommend the cottage.
We recently spent a week in this lovely cottage near Shaftesbury. This charming cottage had everything we needed for our winter holiday, including open fireplaces, a well appointed kitchen and a library full of the most wonderful collection of books. Situated midway between the lovely villages of Sherbourne and Shaftsbury, it is in driving distance to Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge and Avebury, as well as the Jurassic Coast. If the weather is bad (or even if it's not), many lovely hours can be spent curled up in the front of the fire, sampling the book collection. We would definitely like to spend more time here.
What a perfect place to stay for a family of four (4 yo & 2 yo) looking for a three night break in half term in a beautiful spot in Dorset. The house was well laid out with a large, warm, light and well equipped kitchen and adjoining sitting room. We really enjoyed having a fire in the evenings and the girls enjoyed the huge range of children's books. The house is a good size, clean and comfortable and exactly what we were looking for.
We loved the village, the church and a walk in the field with sheep. Thanks Stanley for the really helpful information brochure in the house setting out all of the options.
This is a beautiful house in a stunning part of the country. We drove through so many idyllic villages with pub, ancient church and stone houses. There is so much space and it was so beautifully quiet at night. All in all, a great break.
