“We had a fantastic stay at this hotel!”
Reviewed May 20, 2010

Having read other reviews we arrived not quite sure what to expect.

But, our room was clean and remarkably spacious for a family. The en-suite was a bit 'tired' but everything worked and it was perfectly adequate for a family.

The swimming pool was lovely and bigger than we'd anticipated.

The staff were brilliant, we needed to visit the local A&E during our trip and the hotel staff were caring and bothered about the welfare of our son! They couldn't do enough to help us. The hotel are definitely 'child friendly!'

The breakfast was lovely and once again the staff were helpful in providing food suitable for the children.

We were really pleased we'd stayed and would definitely revisit!

We stayed here despite the adverse reviews. This was a good, clean hote., OK, so NOT the Ritz, but very adequate. Good sized bed, clean room and the food in the restaurant was varied and appetising.
We had a lovely welcome when we arrived and were made to feel welcome throughout our stay.
Do not listen to all the other reviews, and give this hotel a try, it does not deserve the adverse reviews listed here! They are working hard to develop the service and care about the guests.

We stayed there for 5 days. The managers, Jackie and Graham, (and all the staff) were so very helpful, over and above the call of duty. The hotel for us was a great central base. The bar and restaurant served us well. (the chef, Lewis, did a fantastic gnocci...sorry if I've spelt it wrong.....The breakfasts were magnificent. The pool was a great stress reliever in that it gave the children something to do.....kids in the pool, you sitting reading a book with a G&T reading a book supervising.........fantastic. For me....the staff were fantastic and Soooo very helpful. Would recommend this hotel to anyone...especially families.

Had to find an hotel to stay at for a friends wedding and ended up here. Was thoroughly disappointed by its incredibly tired decor, the old bathroom and the slightly-grubby-through-age look of everything. Especially since it wasn't cheap.

Avoid if you can.

Arriving at the hotel we were greeted by pleasant friendly staff, who were very helpful. The room was clean, well presented and welcoming. Eating both nights in the restaurant, the food was superb freshly cooked. Satff extremely helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble. The pool was on the small side but adequate, a leisure pool not a pool for doing lots of swimming. Several families were staying so it was ideal for them. Walking into Shaftesbury, about 10 minutes. Beautiful views and a lovely town. I would certainly use it again.

Ok the 1st things i should point out is that most people come on here to whinge about specific events, which provides no yardstick to the reader - also it is made harder becasue the review is by its nature subjective. So to provide some kind of yardstick - I am a 30 something year old Londoner, with not an ounce of snobbery. My expectations are very low and pretty simple.... Polite, friendly & mildly common sense minded staff, and basic but clean decor fittings etc. I am a very diplomatic and polite person, however nothing could have prepared me for these backwatered moronic staff, who a re quite clearly cashing in on the fact that it is pretty much the ONLY hotel in Shaftesbury.

This truly was without any exageration the worse hotel I have ever stayed at in my entire life! (I really did expect Basil Fawlty to jump out from behind the counter at any given moment on the numerous and lengthy visits I had to the recption counter!)

A few examples of how I quantify my statement are:

Massively overpriced.

Decor that hasnt been refurbished in at least 40 years.

Dangerously corroded electrical fittings, with 5 different plugs strewn accross the floor as there was only 1 socket in room.

Overall smell of damp, musky / old people smell.

Incredibly slow staff with no awareness of people or concept of customer service.

A totally incompetent room booking system that saw multiple bookings either amended or cancelled altogether.

The creme de la creme however was discovering that someone had successfully managed to convince the staff into giving them a 2nd key to someone elses single room containing 1 single bed without the roomholders knowledge or consent.

Trying to explain to the duty manager in the morning the importance of security, and how dangerous it is to give someone a key "just becasue they asked for one". And going through the usual, what if it was a burglar? And the various other security risks this might present. Also they were asked what their validation process is for allowing someone access to a room that they dont have the right to. Did they ask for ID? Did they take the persons name? Did they attempt to contact the room holder? No - to each and every answer - with no apology or concept that they had done anythign wrong!!

All of these questions fell on a frank and expressionless face - they just couldnt get the point so in one last final attempt to illustrate the point (and also to try to get them to understand why it had caused such anger in the roomholder, and why it resulted in a threat to call the police to eject the intruder from the room).....

A very simple analogy was deployed - by asking what would they say if someone came into recption and told them "the sky was green" ??? The reply was.... yes you guessed it : GREEN !!!!

Trust me if you stay at this hotel you will definitely be risking one or all of the following:
a) your enjoyment
b) your relaxation
c) your health & safety
d) your personal & possibly valuable possesions (there are no room safes BTW)

I am also writing to all the budget hotels like travelodge to tell them that they could utterly clean up in this town, as it does get lots of visitors with Stonehenge, Cheddar Gorge, Annual Steam Fair plus many other great things to see and do - its just shame that the hotels are way way way below par.

Rgds

We arrived at the hotel on Sunday afternoon for a one night stay. We were told that the boilers supporting the swimming pool were not working and therefore could not use the pool. Fair enough these things happen and the superior room we booked was basically OK. Our problem started at dinner - we waited nearly 35 mins for our starter and then a further 30 mins for the main course. We were told that the kitchen was short staffed but there were only four people in the restaurant including us! My starter was poor and was spoilt by the high level of salt within the dish - barely edible. We both ate only small amounts of our main course as our appetites had now subsided. The waitress apologised and said the chef was prepared to offer us a coffee free of charge - we declined - an insult. Overall we felt cheated because the food is not cheap. When we returned to our room we found that both rooms either side were occupied and the noise from TVs and loose floorboards made it impossible to sleep. To add to our woes the room was extremely hot and the heated towel rail in the bathroom was struck in the on position - even with the bathroom door closed the room had reached an unbearable temperature. In addition the bed's mattress had more lumps than school custard.
We left the hotel at 2310 and drove home. A complete waste of money and an experience I would not wish to repeat.
