Stayed for a weekend and had a fantastic time. Communications with Jane ahead of our stay were excellent and instructions very clear. The cottage is in a superb location, Gold Hill is a short walk from all amenities, beautifully quiet but a couple of minutes from the town centre, coffee shops, a couple of small museums and several nice pubs. Car parking was always available lower on the hill. The cottage is fab, super history, plenty of room over the four floors and well equipped. As you might expect from such an old building, it has some quirks and tons of character. We used a number of the local eateries, which were excellent. Everything essential was provided, towels, bath robes, shower gel and shampoo and there was a nice welcome basket. There was very good WiFi, a decent coffee machine and TV/DVD etc. Our only area of constructive feedback is the garden, lots of climbers and vigorously growing plants and it was a little overgrown when we visited, which made it difficult to allow our kids to explore and wander. Otherwise, a superb weekend and well worth a visit.
We booked the cottage because we needed a holiday with access to piano. We knew the place would be nice because of all the pos-ve reviews. But we were still surprised and delighted: such a blend between very old and very modern. It is so much bigger than meets the eye. We enjoyed breakfast and afternoon drink on the sunny terrace and also spent evenings by the fire. We loved the touches like coffee machine, bathrobes, welcome basket, beautiful shower products. Amazing place!
On 21April, 2017 my dream of staying in Updown Cottage came true. Updown is a 16c cottage. A perfect marriage of the 16th and 21st century. Four bedrooms. Three bathrooms. Music room and sitting room. The kitchen is truly amazing. One wall is stone. Original stone. A beautiful dining room wth a gorgeous wood table that could seat 12 people is right off the kitchen and overlooks the beautiful garden.
The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need down to and including all the spices!
Full sized Bosch fridge. Bosch dishwasher and Bosch washer and dryer. Belfast sinks in kitchen and laundry room. Even an ironing board. Jane and Simon, the owners, have thought of everything. Cable TVs, trunk full of dvds, books and sheet music. Wood burner in the sitting room with wood!!
The cooker is an Aga MasterChef which is an amazing cooker.
The back garden, overlooking Blackmore Vale, is a magical place. It is a terraced garden with lovely special spots in which to sit and breathe in the clean Dorset air.
The beds are heavenly and the sheets, towels, shower robes and Bramley products are lovely. Updown Cottage is on iconic Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset.
Shaftesbury is a quintessential English town. High street is just up Gold Hill.
Plenty of shopping and restaurants. Lovely people.
I didn't want to leave and I certainly plan on coming back.
Lovely location and a divine cottage every time we left we felt like movie stars as people were taking photos
We booked Updown Cottage for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint. The cottage is great and just as described. It is spread over four floors and all the rooms are decorated to a very high standard. It has the feel of a home where the owners have just stepped out (in a good way). The welcome basket was a very nice touch and it furnished us with our breakfast, which we ate in the lovely garden, for the length of our stay. Gold Hill is iconic having been made famous by the Hovis advert but it is also surprisingly quiet as there is no through traffic. We very much enjoyed our time at Updown Cottage and Simon and Jane were very helpful. Shaftesbury is a quiet town, at least in March, but that suited us. There are lots of places to walk and Park Walk alongside the excavations of the Abbey is particularly atmospheric at dusk. We didn't eat in any of the town's restaurants but from what we saw on our walks they all looked nice. We were too early in the year for the various museums in the town but that made us determined to return.
When our Canadian family decided to join us in England for Christmas we wanted to find something special...Updown Cottage was perfect. In fact, it was more than we could have ever expected! From our easy arrival (with a lovely welcome basket of goodies, a Christmas tree and firewood waiting for us!), extremely comfortable stay, gorgeous views, cozy games and movie nights by the fire, a fully loaded kitchen, excellent day-tripping opportunities from the area, and also dining/shopping and even countryside rambles within and around Shaftesbury - it was just perfect and will be a Christmas to remember. My family and I were over-the-moon with this rental and the worst part was honestly having to leave at the end of the trip!
If you are reading this right now stop what you're doing and JUST BOOK. I promise, you will NOT regret it.
Thank you so much to Jane for being so accommodating and flexible, her quick responses and answers making the booking process a breeze. We will be recommending this place to everybody we know - oh and yes, fingers crossed we'll be back.
This cottage is an exceptional find, and a sweet nest for a family. We really enjoyed the views, the garden, well thought thought and appointed property, comfortable little touches everywhere. In a nutshell: rustic with a touch of luxury. If you are wanting to get a taste of Dorset, could not recommend higher. Will definitely come back! Very grateful to the owners for taking extra care of us
