“Tassimo's in the bedroom!!”
Reviewed August 9, 2010

Well situated boutique hotel in the centre of Shaftesbury with free parking a short walk around the corner.
We stayed here on a Tuesday and Wednesday night, 13th-14th July on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal.
Our room was trendy and very spacious. Although it lacked bathrobes, biscuits (on the first night!) and a toothbrush mug it DID have a Tassimo machine with ample pods - fantastic!!
The restaurant was extremely quiet on the first night - just one other couple - but strangely full to overflowing the next evening. Food was excellent and not overly priced but unfortunately the service was terribly slow on occasion, which lead to a couple of luke warm dishes - shame.
We were struck by how incredibly young all the staff seemed to be - not one appeared to be over 20! Without exception they were all very polite, courteous and helpful.
The bar was great and it had a super, cosy lounge.
All in all, very pleasant and I would recommend to couples of all ages.

Some days ago we stayed at the Wentworth Hotel in Aldeburgh; this week is was the Grosvenor Hotel in Shaftesbury. In many ways, these hotels are as different as they possibly could be – in location, in history, in ownership and in their style of service. However, both attract enthusiastic customers, at least that is what TripAdvisor seems to be saying. The difference between the two was summed up before we had even arrived at the Grosvenor. At both hotels, we ‘phoned a few minutes ahead to ask for details about parking. At both hotels, we were given perfectly adequate instructions. However, at the Wentworth, we made our way from the hotel parking, across the road to ring the bell in reception. At the Grosvenor, a young man was standing outside the door to take our cases to our rooms, to direct us to parking, and to arrange tea, gratis, for when we returned. Such things make a difference. And, this level of interested service was apparent throughout our days at the Grosvenor. Those who recruit and train here should be congratulated.

The room, described as superior, was much as one would expect in a new ‘boutique’ hotel, with a flat screen, MP3 player, posh coffee machine and a very large ensuite. The bed was excellent. Sadly, the only chair was a desk chair and not the sort for relaxing and reading and the cupboard was large but not much else. The architect seemed keen to throw light down the toilet which left the bathroom mirror somewhat gloomy and shaving problematic!

The Grosvenor prides itself on its food and rightly so. The chef is Michelin starred and trademark twists of biscuitry and of smoked bacon appeared in many dishes. Meals, both breakfast and dinner, looked really good on the plate and tasted so. There were lovely lemon cakes and chocolate brownies for tea. Over three main meals, a wonderfully light pate, a courgette soup, an excellently cooked and rich duck, and a custard tart were memorable. The tasting menu, usually an opportunity for flamboyance, was somewhat muted. The chef has an enthusiasm for sharp blue cheese which appeared in soup, in a fettuccine and again as part of the cheese selection. The last was probably a mistake as it completely overwhelmed a less strident goat’s cheese. (My wife disagrees with that last bit .. )

So, on balance, this is an excellent hotel with nice rooms, great food, and an interested staff. At the time we stayed, the Grosvenor had a very attractive offer of £150 per couple for bed and breakfast which included a £50 contribution to dinner, this being the price of two set dinner menus. This was excellent value and I see that the hotel agrees, as for August the price has been raised to £175. It is then probably right that an extra service charge should be added for food and drink outside the inclusive arrangement. Whether, then it is also right to present a bill asking for a further gratuity, where the POS system limits you to paying some fixed percentage of the bill – 5%, 10%, that, frankly, I am not sure about. The Grosvenor needs to be quite clear about its rates and what extra it needs you to pay and what it would encourage you to pay.

i'd been on a boat for a week and travelled far to arrive in shaftesbury. an amazing warm welcome awaited me, along with a long lime and soda and a deep bath. the hotel is fantastic. beautifully designed. gorgeous rooms, stunning bathrooms and a bed to die for. i slept like a princess. the service was second to none. everyone at the hotel was super friendly and very helpful. the food is amazing. i opted for the eggs benedict in the morning. set me up perfectly for the day. the hotel is perfectly situated right in the middle of shaftesbury. i would recommend it to anyone. 11 out of 10. stunning. only wish i could of stayed longer. will definately be back.

Arrived to the hotel, John the GM assisted us with our luggage, then showed us where to park the car (free of charge parking behind the hotel). He helped us with the Wi Fi connection and was very charming. We meet the owner which was also very lovely. It is a very nice hotel but needs a few changes. It is a boutique hotel of a good standard great service, with contemporary paintings on the walls.
We ere taken o our room, a standard room with a double bed, my husband did not like it as it had only a small double bed and the room faced the high street. ( the room had no double glazing). We asked to be upgraded (we were free of charge) and were willing to pay the extra charge. John showed us another room in the back of the hotel, much superior to the standard and said we could be moved there, but only for 1 night as the hotel was full the next day, we shall be moved back to our original booking the next day. We agreed. The room was very spacious indeed, it had a king size bed, very comfortable, a rather small TV for such a large room. The bathroom had a walk in shower with no bath. The toiletries and fine towels. It did not have any robs. The rooms do not have a non disturb sign, nor a book explaining about the area etc. The room did not have double glazing, so one could hear the dog barking next door for a while. There isn't any sound proofing a. s we could clearly hear next door. Around midnight all was silent and peaceful. The bar has an extensive wine collection, the service was impeccable. The next day wee were moved to our original booking - a standard room facing the high street on the 1st floor. The room is much smaller then the superior room, the sink is very small. There is not a shelf in he bath room to put our personal toiletries, again a walk in shower with no bath. after 2300, the noise from the street was incredibly loud. Groups of drunks were walking along the street and could be heard till 0445! Which is in fact when we finally fell asleep. Al this would have been stopped with double glazing or indeed secondary glazing. In the morning, we came down to breakfast and waited to be served for 15 minutes, as we were in a harry, my husband had to go to the kitchen to call on a waitress who indeed were laughing and chatting to her fellow colleagues in the kitchen. Her service was not good. We shall return to the hotel as the service and the food was brilliant, but never to stay in any of the rooms facing the high street.

My husband and I met up with friends for cocktails and dinner at this beautifully renovated and stunningly decorated new "boutique" hotel. After a fabulous dinner we stayed the night and had a delicious and leisurely breakfast the next morning before wandering about the picturesque little market town and heading home, feeling as though we'd had a wonderful 24 hr escape from real life.

The hotel is exceptionally good value - beautiful surroundings, a tranquil and chic atmosphere and delightful and professional staff don't usually come at this price! Our other friends had 2 young children staying, and the staff were fantastic with them too - a "grown up" hotel that manages to be both chic and unstuffy, easy for families or friends to meet, but elegant, romantic and spoiling for couples. The public spaces are fantastic - lots of different areas to linger over coffee or a cocktail on your own or with friends.

The rooms are spacious (even the standard doubles), with lovely decor (all rooms are individually decorated - I had a look at several!), the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in, and best of all a Bodum coffee/tea machine which makes delectable coffee. The bathrooms are very chic, all marble, with wonderful toiletries - it all feels smart and rather luxurious.

I/we will definitely be back - it's so refreshing to find a hotel which is actually about giving its customers what they want rather than showing off its own trendiness.

What a great find. A beautiful boutique hotel. Room and service were impeccable.
Need to single out one thing - the fantastic chef and his restaurant. The food was delicious. Some of the best I've had in an English hotel.

We were looking for a meal in Shaftsbury and passed the Hotel Grosvenor. Husband had set menu which was 2 courses plus glass of wine for £15. I had two courses of a la carte for same amount - no wine.

The quality of the food was totally excellent. We eat out a lot and often feel sold short, but congratulations to the chef. The service was also very good and the environment was a delight. Would love to go back and stay in newly refurbished hotel in lovely setting.
