This is a lovely cottage with friendly, knowledgeable staff. You can get up close to Thomas Hardy even sit in his chair at his ( copy of )writing desk. The staff want to pass on their knowledge and aim to help you really get a feel for what life was like. The garden is lovely. The visit takes between 1 and 2 hours. As a father of 5 I think this is not really a child's place to visit although effort is made for children.

I recommend a visit.

We were on a circular walk from Dorchester and decided to make a small diversion to visit Hardy's Cottage via the visitor centre (which houses a nice cafe).
There's not a great deal to see, basically it comprises a garden and a small thatched cob cottage with three rooms downstairs (parlour, office & kitchen) and 3 simply furnished bedrooms upstairs. Obviously his builder father wasn't that successful because it was very modest and must have been cramped when everyone was at home.
It was nice to see where Hardy was born and lived his early years but there wasn't an awful lot of information about him and his family. Thankfully the two volunteers on duty were very interesting and did provide some background information.
I think out entire visit only lasted 20 minutes, had I not been an NT member I think I may have been disappointed after paying the entrance fee
Apparently it can get very crowded and entry is by timed ticket but it was quiet when we were there.

A beautiful taste of life in Hardy's times. Loads of very helpful and informative helpers on hand. A lovely touch that the log fire was going.

As NT Members we visited hardy's cottage on a wet day and were lucking as one of the volunteers was giving 30 min talks about Hardy's early life and the history of the cottage through different periods of the Hardy family. This made the visit inside much more informative. A good modern cafe information centre where we had an enjoyable lunch.

Lovely cottage. Nice to see how people lived. And to learn the history of a great author. He wrote so many well known books.
