“Walking on History”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

Treading in the footsteps of our ancestors, taking in the lovely views and getting some exercise at the same time. It's easy to imagine how it might have been watching the Romans moving in to attack and thinking "we're safe as houses here" and then ... the rest is history!

“Great walks and views”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Excellent walking and a fascinating history. This former hill fort stands just south of Dorchester and commands great views across the neighbouring countryside. First class for dog-walking, although take care when sheep are grazing the higher slopes.

“Fantastic Location for Hyperactive Kids”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

An excellent, open air attraction which can be seen for miles around and which is safe for kids to run around in. We have been here on several occasions over the years and would recommend it.

“Britain's largest fortified hill-top settlement”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

Maiden Castle is an Iron Age "hill fort" - actually a fortified hill-top settlement rather than what we might think of as a fort in the traditional sense. Going through several phases of development it became, at 47 acres, the largest hill fort in Britain. A walk around the ramparts gives a real impression of the vast scale of this settlement and how impregnable the defenses appear. There are no facilities on site and it is not 'wheelchair-friendly'.

“Brisk Walk”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

We enjoyed a brisk walk up to the castle in the sunshine. Well signed bt English Heritage. Great to see so many families enjoying the site.
