Britannia Hotel Bournemouth
Ranked #63 of 66 Hotels in Bournemouth
Reviewed April 15, 2009

My wife and I have recently returned from an Easter stay at the Britannia Hotel, Bournemouth and have to say we are extremely disappointed with the experience. My wife complained three times about dust on the TV table before something was done.
We cannot complain about the quality of the breakfast, although on one morning, when I was waiting for a fried egg, I was told that they were cooking, and then the waiter brought them out, (4 on a tray). The coffee was diabolical and the evening meal was sub-standard, uncovered and looked as if it had been there a long time.
Overall, the hotel, with limited car parking spaces, that is an understatement, broken garden furniture, cigarette butts all over the garden area, and lack of atmosphere was disappointing and we would have no hesitation in not recommending this hotel.

Here was my list of complaints for the customer services department at Britannia Hotels:
1. The corridor smelt.
2. My room smelt.
3. The throw on the bed stank!!
4. The springs were coming through the mattress.
5. The room had black mould around the windows and on the walls.
6. The wallpaper was peeling away.
7. The walls are paper thin and you can hear people in other rooms BLOWING THEIR NOSES!
8. To get around the 'double' room, we had to walk sideways around the outside of the bed.
9. The hotel information 'brochure' (a sheet of A4 paper) in the room was tea-stained, wet and screwed up.
10. I left the room the next morning covered in bites. They were not there the night before and we slept with the window closed. I leave it to you to work out why.....

I won't even mention the general decor of the hotel at all.
If you want basic, clean and tidy accommodation in Bournemouth, book into a B&B. A lot of those places could show this 'establishment' a thing or two at less than half the price. Wanting to charge £145 for the room that I had is laughable!

And Mr Manager, please spend less time replying to people's complaints on here and more time sorting your hotel out!!!

Hotel seriously needs updating, aswell as a complete clean as it is filthy. Superior rooms are disgraceful, holes in walls, mildewed windows, imagine what the standard and economy rooms are like!!! disgusting, we moved more times than i can remember and every room stank, carpets dirty and unhooved, old crisps under beds just gross. Dinner was not fit for my dog, all dried out and hard. Dont be tempted by their offers pay just a little bit more and stay elsewhere, i need a holiday to get over this awful holiday!!!

Thank you for your review. We are sorry some areas of your stay did not meet your expectations. Our traditional décor means that often a wide range of fabrics are used to furnish our bedrooms. However, your comments regarding housekeeping have been passed to the relevant department for investigation. Our restaurants are self service, allowing our guests more flexibility. Food is regularly re-stocked, and we do apologise if there was any delay in this area. We apologise that some areas of your stay were not up to your satisfaction and we hope this does not deter you from staying with Britannia Hotels in the future. Feedback is important to us as we use it to further improve our services and standards and we thank you for your comments.

I firstly have to admit that my friend and I booked this hotel purely due to price. We got a very good deal though the hotel's website, £35 which included an evening meal and breakfast.......for 2 people, basically £17.50 each. Maybe we shouldn't have expected so much.

On arrival the hotel looked pleasant from the outside and parking was available so no problems there. We checked in pretty swiftly and took the lift to the second floor. Warning the lfits only fit 2 people and very very compact, don't use these if you don't like small spaces.

As soon as we entered the room we could tell it wasn't going to be very nice, a very very musky smell and decor not to write home about. The worst thing was the beds, we had a twin room but i think the beds much be 20 years old, the springs were completely done in and squeaked like mad. The sheets on the bed were clean but on top they had blankets and very shabby looking throws, both of which we removed straight away as they were dirty. Everything just seemed very very grubby. The bathroom was ok and the shower was powerful enough.

Our evening meal was a buffet and a good enough choice of food although the waitress service was terrible, we didn't get offered a drink and had to ask for our main meal plates to be removed once we were finished as they brought out our deserts. Breakfast was also a buffet style but i'd say don't go for the fry up as everything was very dry like it had been sat around for ages.

I know we paid a very small amount so you could say it was good value for money, however next time i will definately pay more and stay somewhere nicer. I don't think it deserves the star rating and if we had paid full price for our room I would have been shocked at what we found.

The location was ideal for the BIC which we were going to and a 5 minute walk to the beach.

This is my second time at staying in a Britannia chain and will definately not be going back to one again.

The hotel is over-priced, in severe need of a makeover, shabby, dirty in places (particularly bathrooms), with stained furniture and carpets in the rooms. The lift is tiny and rickety and the bar has zero atmosphere. The breakfast contained burnt toast and undercooked sausages... I don't think I need to say anything more, don't go!

Stayed for one night, got a good internet rate. Would have been very dissapointed if I had paid standard hotel rate. Very well situated for the beach walks and the town centre. Room was fairly compact with an internal view overlooking kitchen and extraction system - not too pleasant. The reception area was also a bit low-rent despite recently being decorated.
The breakfast was included in the rate and was probably one of the best cookded breakfast I've had in a hotel. It was buffet, but as the hotel was busy all the food had a good turnaround time and was hot and fresh.

Overall, nothing too fancy here, but much better value than a travelodge etc - especially with breakfast included.

We arrived early and the friendly receptionist said she would see if our room was ready and we liked it before checking us in. The lift is very small and the room was on the fourth floor. My partner has osteoarthritis in her knees and we were not keen to be so high if there was an alternative. The receptionist reviewed other available rooms and offered us a larger room on the first floor. This was fine. The room was clean except for a stain on the carpet. The buffet breakfast was fine and evening meals ok although the desserts lacked imagination. The more modern swimming pool and jacuzzi were ideal to relax in and all staff helpful. The pictures around the hotel lack aesthetic appeal and the place is lack lustre but we were well looked after and got value for money with a dinner bed and breakfast deal for 2 nights for £130 booking through Britainnia's own website. It seems to have conference groups in and is about 15m walk from the BIC where my conference was held.
