“Very comfortable and clean”
Reviewed June 19, 2011

We were given a very warm welcome on arrival. The room was moderate but clean and comfortable. The dining staff greeted us cheerfully each morning and evening and the food was good, home cooked and tasty. The position of the hotel,on the West Cliff is just around the corner from a grassy area which then leads down to the beach.A pleasant place to stay and also quiet.

This was our second visit here. The food was excellent, the staff courteous and smart. We had a lafrge double room, very well kept. The Hotel is extremely central and we would have no hesitation is returning.

When we first arrived the lady behind the desk was very nce and polite and showed us where to park as there wasnt any spaces outside the hotel.
The decor of the place was very dated, but the general cleanliness was very good, and it smelt nice. The room was fine for a family of 4 and we thought we had made a good little choice of hotel.
After a nice day down the beach etc, we came back hungry and full of hope about the dinner. Firstly we got turned away at 7 oclock because the waitress said they werent ready, so we had to wait a further 15mins, even then we went back on our own accord,no one came out and said we are ready now. We got seated for the meal and the waitress brought over some bread, which was stale,we wondered how long that had been there???
Poured some water for the family and that had a horrible after taste, again how long had that been there?? It wasnt even cold!
It wasnt looking good. Worse was to follow....we had a starter and that took about 30 seconds to come out, it was horrible and pre heated, then we ordered our meals and within 20 seconds ALL of our meals came out, YES YOU DID READ IT CORRECTLY 20 SECONDS!!!!!!Bearing in mind i had a roasted chicken in there aswell. The alarm bells were ringing now, it stunk of Microwaved zappiness!! The veg that came out was so soggy and the chips, well again how long were they left until they were re-heated!!!!!
My wife had an Omellete with mushrooms on the top, and let me tell you, it looked like a dried up pancake! It was small, and bits were peeling off it, and the mushrooms, you ever tried micro mini rubber mushrooms?? How hard is it to make an Omellete? The kids had scampi and chips, again the chips looked nuked in the microwave just revolting, and one of my kids only ate the sweetcorn, and the other was so hungry she ate a few pieces of scampi. Next was the chicken, ive never ordered a chicken meal and it brought out to me in 20 seconds, talk about no pride in the cooking no concern for customers, it was small, dry, luke warm, the plate was way way hotter then the food, it was just a joke. We decided to make a complaint to the man standing around, he tried to turn it around and say he's never had any complaints before and made it feel like we were lying, when we are quite entitled to complain about food we are paying for., he even suggested we book out if we didnt like it! As it was we upped and left and found a harvester nearby and had a very late meal, money we didnt want to spend. When we came back, we complained to the man behind the booking in desk(reception) and politely said to him we were not happy with the evening meal and that we were tired and decided we wanted to just go home and could we have a refund as we were no longer staying and didnt have any dinner or werent going to have any breakfast, his reply oh no no no, your not having a refund. There were no apologies for poor food, no alternatives nothing, just a rude, sarcastic man. We had no choice but to stay the night. Didnt hang around for breakfast as if the night before was anything to go by, didnt want to risk it!!

Room Tip: Dont go there unless you enjoy microwaved food!!!!

Well, what can we say. We categorically DO NOT use or serve microwaved food to guests.
This booking is known to us as the persons wife actually could not understand food being served quickly and ended up waving a plate of food under our managers nose as he was trying to serve other guests. The person was asked to leave the restaurant if they could not manage their behaviour.
The guests father, who had actually made and paid for the booking as a present spoke to us afterwards, and after we had expained the hotels and indeed general catering practise, commented that perhaps it was because they were not used to staying in hotels and his daughter was heavily pregnant (??)
Our staff are efficient but not that fast.. As everyone tends to go in the restaurant at the same time the menu food is cooked andprepared in the run up to opening and when an itrem is finished it is off the menu
Equate it to going to a pub or carvery for sunday lunch and having to wait 2 hours whilst the beef is being cooked-no way. People get agitated if they have to wait a long time.
The other aspects have been embellished to actually make some sort of point!
As our chef chuckled -you couldn't even micrwave a chicken in 20 seconds -even if we did Microwave-WHICH WE DONT!

Basic room - but clean, with fresh linen and towels / En suite (strong odour present!).
Good breakfast, steep steps to beach, but great location if your mobile. Very friendly service staff, although senior staff were stern - that said service ran like clockwork.
Just a step up from a b&b really @ £50 per night per room.

This was our 2nd visit to the Ullswater and we are so pleased to have found it. It is a very friendly and welcoming hotel and we feel relaxed as soon as we walk through the door! You are made to feel very welcome. The bedrooms are ideal- spacious, clean, comfy beds -perfect bathroom facilities. Dining room and bar area ideal. Sun trap in the garden Its minutes from the lovely sandy beach and Bournemouth town centre. Excellant value.
