“Warm and welcoming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

We stayed at the Hermitage for the New Year celebration. The first impression was that it was very well located, close to the Pier - and it had it's own car part (free!). We always look for a hotel with a large and comfortable lounge, and the Hermitage did not disappoint. The Bar lounge was warm - very welcome bearing in mind that it was extremely cold, wet and windy outside. We paid a supplement for a sea view room and were glad we did - the view was wonderful. The room was "compact" but very clean and the beds comfortable. It is fair to say that this is an older hotel and does not have the spacious rooms which we probably expect in more modern hotels but it made up for this by the level of service we received. The bathroom was well provided with extras, including a bath duck - a humorous touch.
We had the distinct impression that the hotel was very well managed. The duty manager, the restaurant manager and the bar manger were very visible throughout our stay and really ensured that the guests had excellent, friendly service.
The hot water system developed a fault whilst we were there but the maintenance team worked tirelessly to rectify the situation - not easy on New Year's day when suppliers of spare parts were not open for business. We put this down to bad luck and would not criticise the hotel for the problem.
After these positive comments, why then not a five star rating? Well, it was the Bar that let the hotel down. No J2Os, no pineapple juice (which meant that the ladies' favourite Malibu and pineapple was not available) and no cocktails. Despite being served with mulled wine on arrival, the Bar could not produce this at any other time when it would have been appreciated after a walk in the gale which prevailed most the time we were there.
The meals were outstanding, very well presented and served efficiently by friendly waiting staff. We would use this hotel again.

Room Tip: We loved the large picture window in our sea view room. If you like a splendid view, opt for one of...

We try to visit Bournemouth for a short stay once per year and tend to visit when the Hermitage can accommodate us. We find the Hermitage the perfect place to say for location , parking , exceptional staff , atmosphere, food and rooms. Would love to see a larger outside seating area.

Pleasant and attentive service, good meeting facilities, lovely rooms (we had sea view rooms - thank you). Car park and a great central location just a few minutes walking either to town, beach or BIC (Bournemouth arena). No gym or fitness facilities but the beach is right next door with a long promenade for a walk, run, cycle or even a sea swim or surf weather permitting.

I stayed at The Hermitage on December 13th as part of my company's Christmas party. The room rate of £44.50, including breakfast, I thought was excellent value. I'd booked a single but they kindly upgraded me to a double with a great view of the Pier. Parking was a real problem though. The room was clean and tidy, although I found it a bit warm and had to open the windows. I decided to have a bath before going down for the party and whilst the bath was deep enough it certainly wasn't long enough. Even with my back against the back of the bath I still couldn't stretch my legs out. It did not feel comfortable. The bar managed admirably with the amount of people who were also there for their Christmas parties and the prices on the draft beers were quite reasonable although a lack of choice was disappointing (no premium lager on draught). The prices for the bottled lagers were on the expensive side, especially the Becks at £3.60 for a 275ml bottle. The staff throughout the Hotel were excellent. Always smiling and helpful. The meal was good, if a tad over-priced at £34.95 a head. One of the most expensive for the Christmas period in Bournemouth I was told. The real bug-bear regarding the food were the supplements. Nearly £12 for the steak, nearly £10 for the sea bass. There were supplements on the Thai crab cake starter and the cheese board. Now, I accept that many restaurants charge supplements on some courses but these supplements bordered on extortionate. Given what The Hermitage normally charge regarding supplements on food it smacked of profiteering without any justification, especially as it was already charging £34.95 a head. Two of my colleagues had the steak. Neither of them was asked how they would like it cooked. Both steaks arrived cooked medium, which one colleague was happy with. My other colleague preferred his steak rare but said it would do. With a supplement of nearly £12 the least they should expect is to be asked how they would like their steak cooked. I did enjoy what I'd chosen though and the rest of our party (around 17 of us) were happy with what they had. I have to agree with a previous poster regarding the size of the dance floor. It was far too small for the number of people there. Breakfast was fine and plentiful. My over all experience was a positive one and I would definitely stay at The Hermitage again. My mark of 3 for value reflects the over-priced supplements on the food and not the cost of the room itself.

Stayed on 21st December for Christmas party. Hotel very clean and welcoming. Room in keeping with rest of hotel, very clean and well appointed. Staff on arrival and during evening were all very helpful and smartly turned out. The Restaurant Manager was on hand all evening, ensuring staff were attentive and helpful. Food was good for the amount of people that were catered for and beer prices were kept at pub prices which was a welcome surprise . The only criticism at all was the tiny dance floor, perhaps some tables could have been moved or rearranged so more people could have danced. Breakfast good as well. Very nice stay and good to leave a Hotel without feeling ripped off. Congratulations to all staff and management.

My wife and I have spent our first Christmas holiday at the Hermitage Hotel.
We had a second floor superior sea view bedroom, which was very spacious, very clean and well equipped, as a surprise, there where fresh flowers and a box of chocolates in the room.
All of our meals chosen from a varied menu, where provided in the restaurant and where excellent. The restaurant is very spacious and comfortable. The restaurant Manager Charles and his team, certainly looked after us with a first class service.
Live entertainment was provided each evening, the Salvation Army Brass Band and a local choir provided additional carol music on Christmas Eve.
Various quizzes and bingo where provided each afternoon for those interested.
The weather was mixed, but with only a very short walk to the pier, promenade and gardens we found the hotel to be in an excellent position.
We would like to thank everyone working at the hotel during our holiday, for making it so wonderful and memorable and we have made a provisional reservation for next year.

Booked our christmas party here. So well organised even down to pre-printed place cards for every person with the menu they had picked printed on it so no confusion when the food was delivered to the table.

The food was piping hot and tasted amazing which was pretty good when there were probably serving around 100 people at the same time.

The disco after was excellent, the DJ played everything we asked him too and more. Book your xmas party here you wont be dissapointed

Room Tip: Room 210 amazing view and roomy
