We walked from the pier to Alum Chine (which was wonderful), along the promenade on the first Saturday of October. It was very busy - I was surprised to find that cycling was allowed, many of them were darting in and out around the pedestrians - it meant that walkers had to look around all the time and were unable to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
There are apparently speed limits and rules about priority for pedestrians but it seems that no one enforces them and perhaps the cyclists are mostly local and prefer to use the prom as a route into town. Cycling is only banned in July and August, it seems that those are the only months that visitors can safely walk along the front.
I would suggest that the council should consider making it 'pedestrians only' at weekends from May to the end of October.

The beach is lovely and sandy and there is a paved/concrete promenade so it is easy to walk, cycle or push a pushchair/wheelchair. It has a vibrant feel and there is plenty to do or to watch.

It is a good and nice beach attracting many people. All you can need is available here- rides/beach cafe/fish and chips you name it you got it.
Just a warning: Do not visit shellbay unless you want to be there, shellbay may not suite everyone's taste.

Bourrnemouth beach is beautiful at any time of year. There are plenty of facilities and lots of different places to eat including a Harvester Inn on the promenade. There are spectacular views of the Purbeck hills and Old Harry Rocks and you can walk along the prom as far as Sandbanks. Really something for everyone.
