“Great Location, a bit tired £140 per night but not free wifi”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

The hotel is in a great location, staff are very helpful, the restaurant is very good and seemed good value for money. Car parking is limited but the staff are happy to help. Rooms are pretty tired, we were lucky and got upgraded to the cottages but these still show signs of age. People staying in the main hotel felt that the rooms were surprisingly small, this would be due to the hotel previously being a old manor house which has been converted rather than a purpose built hotel.
The air conditioning was very noisy and the floor tiles in the bathroom were curling and needed replacing.
The staff were great and of the standard you would expect from Marriott.
Overall it was fine, but anyone used to the standard Marriott's in the USA will be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in one of the cottages, best to get an upper floor to ensure a sea view, if you are g...

Thank you for taking time to review your recent visit to the Highcliff.

I was pleased to read your comments about the team here at the hotel - thank you.

We do indeed have a range of shapes and sizes to our bedrooms, but nothing smaller than a good sized double room. Our maintenance team are very busy addressing any condition issues around the hotel and I would appreciate it if you could kindly contact me directly, as I am keen to know which room you stayed in, as our air-conditioning should certainly not be noisy and I have been unable to identify this issue when checking the rooms.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Nice location on top of the cliff, old charm, friendly staff and large comfortable room.
The hotel is well kept but a bit tired. Probably the moment to go for a full renovation.
The mini bar is not stocked.
The breakfast buffet offers a usual large choice but is not exceptional. The art of decent cappuccino making has not yet arrived, still a cappuccino cost £ 3,5 extra.
Not convinced by the food at the restaurant: there are better dining options around
Internet is expensive at £15 / 24 hour.
At £ 195 per night for room & breakfast not really value for money. This rate does include the parking.

We arrived at Bournemouth Marriott from the Mercure Brighton for our wedding anniversary trip the Mercure was dreadful. What a contrast the Marriott staff could not have been more pleasant or helpful. We were upgraded for our anniversary free of charge to a sea view room which was well appointed and nicely furnished and no scratched furniture like the Brighton Mercure. Everywhere we went in the hotel we were acknowledged and offered pleasantries. The breakfast was superb and nothing was too much trouble. We really felt as if we were celebrating a break away . Our only regret is that we had booked 2 nights at the Mercure Brighton and only 1 at the Marriott Bournemouth - wish we had just gone to the Marriott!!!

Room Tip: When the receptionist found out it was our anniversary they upgraded us to a first floor sea view ro...

We stayed here on a Friday night, the location is great, and the staff were nice, the room was tired but pretty comfortable, the WIFI was £16 per day ???!!!!

The room service was terrible, and pricey, the breakfast looked like it should taste good but was just really poor quality, cheap ingredients and everything was over cooked, at £16 each it was a massive let down.

The Marriott owners need to go stay at a Doubletree and see what the competition are doing.

My advice, book the cheapest room and eat elsewhere

Room Tip: Book on a room broker site.

Thank you for your recent review following your visit to the Highcliff.

I am pleased that you enjoyed our wonderful location but sorry to read your comments regarding our breakfast and food in general. We are really proud of the Highcliff Grill; winner of the Taste of Bournemouth / Best Restaurant award at the Bournemouth Tourism Awards. All of our produce is of great quality with a "carefully sourced" policy to ensure fresh, seasonal and sustainable produce are used. This concept extends to breakfast for which our bacon and sausage are provided by our local butcher and all fruits are hand cut here at the hotel on the morning of service.

Wifi is in fact free of charge in the hotel's lobby, lounge and bar area. We do charge for high bandwidth secure connections from the bedroom, should you need to stream a movie or download very large files such as multi-media presentations

Thank you again for your feedback and for staying with us.

I cannot recommend this hotel more, having stayed here many times over 20 years, the most recent being this weekend for a family reunion. The cliff-top location is excellent, being close to the town yet far enough away to avoid the crowds, the rooms are large and well equipped (I promise not to mention to marriott bed yet again). The outdoor swimming pool was a new delight, as it has been heated to 30c so whatever the weather, its a warm treat, and at 7.30am on a cool, still, but sunny may morning, it was one of the best sensations ever. Staff attentive and excellent as usual, (restaurant review as an additional review). Only downside is the car park, too small for the number of hotel clientele, there needs to be a greeter outside the hotel to explain the parking situation. £10 per day is not too bad, but dont try to find a space yourself, cos there never is one. looking forward to coming back soon.

Room Tip: Sea view is a must! else its car park view, which can be amusing watching guests trying to park up

We stayed here for two nights while attending the annual Barbershop convention at the conference centre. The hotel is ideally placed with wonderful views of the coastline, easy access to the beach and within easy walking distance of the town centre and the conference hall. The service was impeccable. Every single member of staff was charming, professional and helpful, even at a very busy weekend breakfast time. We had a standard room but it was very well appointed with lots of luggage space, a good bathroom and tea and coffee making facilities. The choice at breakfast was excellent and if you're lucky you'll get a view of the sea.

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea view come at a premium but are worth it for a special occasion. Arrive early for b...

Trawled the Internet as we wanted one night stay in Bournemouth on a Friday. Found the Marriott on LateRooms and what a brilliant find it was. Price was equivalent to Premier Inn, even with a fee for parking the car, but thats where the similarity ends.

Room was a great size, breakfast was really good. Staff were very helpful and the location was good (albeit a steep walk in to Bournemouth..!!). They even threw in a swim in the Spa Centre for me.

I can't understand why this isn't higher on the rating. No complaints from me...well done Marriott.
