“Great Hotel, Fabulous Location”
Reviewed August 5, 2011

I booked in for a 3 night trip with my Husand and 3 year old. We booked a Junior Suite with sea view. I have never stayed at a Marriott before, usually staying at boutique Hotels but this one really does have an enviable location. It's right on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the beach and pier.
The suite itself was in the cottages, which are an annex joined to the main Hotel building. They are situated next to the spa/healthclub and overlook the pool. The view on the upper floors are great (we had an upper floor suite and whilst the lower floor had direct access to the gardens/grounds, we had the better view).
The suite compised of a 1 bedroom, a living area, bathroom and small hallway. The large bedroom had a king size, comfortable bed. The sitting area was a great size, 3 sofas, 1 a sofa bed that sleeps 2, a dining area for 4, a desk etc. etc.
The suite itself was a fantastic size, very large and actually very child friendly. The furnishings were nice, slightly dated but in good condition. If I was being picky I would say that for almost £300 per night, they could do with a slight facelift and there was a daily charge of £15 to be connected to wifi (which I think is extortionate) but I was generally very happy with the suite itself.
The Hotel staff were fantastic, very helpful and efficient, there was a short wait (5 minutes) to check in but our bags were taken straight to the room. On the second day complimentry drinks, fruit and beach toys were left in our room, which was a lovely touch and very appreciated. The Concierge Chris was beyond helpful when we were trying to choose a restaurant. On the first night there was a problem with one of the TVs and somebody arrived to rectify the problem within 5 minutes of making the call. The rooms were thoroughly cleaned to a very high standard each day.
The breakfast was delicious, great selection and nicely cooked. We used the room service a la carte menu for our last evening meal and the food was fantastic, if I'd known earlier it was so good, we would definitely have eaten in the restaurant.
There are many corporate guests at the Hotel but I think they had the balance right between leisure stays and conference, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely take our daughter there again.
Finally, the fact that we had 3 beautifully hot and sunny days meant we could make full use of the 7 miles of beautiful, sandy beaches. Head away from the pier, in the opposite direction and the beaches are much quieter too.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite in the Cottages

We stayed at this hotel last year with our two daughters and had a fantastic stay overall. There were a couple of small issues that I told the hotel about and the response from management was so exceptional that it outweighed any inconvenience from the problems. This year was faultless but once again it was evident from other guests that the staff and management were on hand 24/7 to sort out any issues that may arise. Very rarely have I seen duty managers so accessible and approachable and I cannot praise the service highly enough. The hill from the beach is the only negative part particularly with pushchairs but honestly after the first rate breakfast the exercise was just what we needed.

special celebration for our anniversary so paid for a sea view, very top floor, room 205 very last room along the front. Dissapointed with size of room and bathroom very very small. Safe didnt work, phoned down and waited quite a while only to be told maintenance had gone as it was a sunday! So couldnt use the safe. Car parking is very limited we were fortunate to get a space so did not move the car during our stay. Staff very helpfull. Used the indoor and outdoor pool, outdoor pool was hotter than a bath which wasnt very comfortable considering it was 26 outside!

We came for a 2 night stay. Hotel has a brilliant position overlooking the bay altho our room wasn't in the sea view category. Nonetheless very comfortable. Some noise from Dorchester suite and neighbouring room so I would advise avoiding 145 at a weekend. This hotel is very popular for weddings.
One of the managers asked us how we were enjoying our stay to which we replied that it was all good apart from there being only one arm chair in a room for two people. By the time we got back to the room another had appeared! That is responsive!
Generally this is a very comfortable hotel with good service levels

Room Tip: Avoid Dorchester wing 1st floor

My family (inc 3 yrd old and 1 yr old) stayed a few nights and loved it. Location is fantastic (beach, town center, boardwalk all w/in a few minutes walk), property was gorgeous and well-cared for, staff was perfect, leisure facilities were excellent, and food was great (best full english around I suspect). We did pay for a suite (and it is on the pricier side), but we were pleasantly surprised with the size, quality, and view. Pricey, but we found it to be worth the cost. The only other negative consideration is that the hotel does sit atop the cliff so expect a bit of hiking up and down the hill (particularly when the lift is unavailable). It was a more pleasant experience than we had expected, would unquestionably return to the Highcliff next time in Bournemouth.

Arrived at the hotel around 3pm. Car park is at the rear of the hotel and we were lucky to get the last parking space. During the rest of the weekend the car park was completely full with ALL space taken. Had we wanted to move our car during the weekend we wouldn't have been able to. 6 cars were blocking us in. Thankfully on the Monday morning it was back to normal and we could leave around 9am. This problem may have been due to the fact that the hotel had 2 weddings on the Saturday.

Despite arriving at 3pm, our room wasn't available until after 5pm. We were given a free drink for our inconvenience.

The room was a typical Marriott room. Clean, well presented, etc. The bathroom was spacious with a bath and separate shower. The only criticism was that, being on the 3rd floor, it took an age for the hot water to reach our taps.

The hotel itself is very nice and well kept. Furniture and decoration in keeping with the building. We took a look at the pool areas which were clean and well maintained. We didn't get around to using them though. The hotel is a little isolated. The position of it is lovely with wonderful sea views. It is next to the funicular railway which runs from promenade level to the hotel. Unfortunately, it closes around 6pm so is no help after an evening out. The walk from the hotel to the beach/pier area if the lift is closed is down a considerable slope which the more infirm may find a little taxing. (Especially up hill after an evening out). There aren't many restaurants close to the hotel. An Irish bar, a pub (which we did intend eating at but walked straight out again as it was so grotty), Thai and Italian restaurants are around the corner from the hotel. There are a couple of restaurants at beach level, and one on the pier (admission to pier 60p). There is a Harvester restaurant on the beach front in the direction of Poole but it is a considerable walk.

On our first night we walked to beach level and tried to get a table at one of the 2 choices of restaurants but despite most tables being empty at 7pm were told they were fully booked. (So annoying). We walked back to the hotel and ate in the restaurant there. This was not the cheapest option! It is expensive! Food was nice and well presented and service very good.

We got what we expected when booking Marriott.

Bournemouth is stunningly beautiful with lovely views of the sea and the coatline. Marriott in Bourmemout is not that great. It is a old property which has not aged well. The rooms and bathrooms are tiny. I have not stayed in this size room, even in NY. It is quite walk to the rooms and you have to search for it. I had a wonderful view over the parking lot!The gym is very nice. Unfortunately, didn't get to use the pool, which looked inviting.

It is one of our appointed hotels so don't have a choice but I am sure there are much better options

Room Tip: Take a sea facing room
