“Was it really closed?”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

We booked a three night stay, bed and full English. The first two nights were very good, great breakfast apart from not having some items like scrambled egg unless you were prepared to wait 15 minutes. The third night was ok until we came down for breakfast at 8 o'clock. What we found was the resturant in darkness and reception with no one about. After calling out for a bit, someone appeared and was very surprised to see us to say the least. When I asked about breakfast he was stunned to find out that we had stayed the night in the hotel and told us that the hotel was actually closed for three days and he had no idea that we were in the building. This was a shock to us and raises some serious issues about safety. Needless to say we did not get the full English. They did make some effort to provide some breakfast items but not what we had paid for sadly. The staff apologised of course but thats not really good enough. I've emailed the parent group but surprise surprise, no response. Doubt well stay there again!

Room Tip: Check they are not closed during your stay

I have now been to this hotel twice on dancing holidays, after the first time I said we would not go again. The 2nd time was due to change of venue and this visit cofirmed my first opinion. The hotel should be good, location and building are good. Food was sub standard and there are management and staff issues that need to be resolved. There were 2 faults in the room that I reported just after arrival, the duty manager took the complaints and said they would be attended to, they were not. These were not the only problems. I have also stayed at the Wessex, it is owned by the same company and is in the same town, it is hard to understand why they are at opposite ends of the scale.

Room Tip: Choose the Wessex.

Booked a room on a late booking website £39 for 2 adults for one night, so didn't expect too much, after all we were going out and didn't expect to spend too much time in our room anyway!! The room itself was shabby, wallpaper hanging off, damp on the walls and the bed was tiny and rock hard!! Toiletries half used!!!!!!!!!! But what else would you expect for £39.....it was probably their worst room!! Didnt have breakfast as we over slept!!

visited this hotel for 5 days on a coach trip, very good in all services, but not at the bar,the staff were not up to the job and would disappear for a smoke from time to time, prices are by far to expensive there were two coach parties at hotel and it would seem all agreed, bar was closing at 10.30 as not many willing to pay prices.

New mattresses & new blankets please!! We found the bed very, very uncomfortable. Our room in general was a bit tired!!
We had two dinners at the hotel which we found quite acceptable & the breakfasts were very nice.
The location is lovely with easy access to the buses & sea front.
With a bit of thought and care. the hotel could be brought up to standard. However, you need a ramp at the front of the hotel. You seem to go to lengths for easy access inside the hotel, but a ramp up the front steps would be a big asset, especially as a great majority of your visitors are elderly.

On first glance the hotel looked lovely with an attractive foyer and dining room, but i'm afraid it ended there. The first thing we noticed was the sewer smell as we entered our room and realised that the bathroom hadn't been cleaned since the room had been vacated. There were stains left on the actual toilet seat and i don't think the inside had met bleach in a long time. The deacor in the room was dated but alright i suppose but in a massive need of repainting and decorating. The staff weren't paticularly helpful and rather rude at some instances to other guests at the hotel. The cherry on the trifle was realising when we got in bed the 1st evening that our "double room bed" was 2 singles pushed together so it wasn't comfortable at all. Needless to say we wont be back

On the whole this weekend just gone was very good. But a few points for the hotel as there were no comments forms to fill in.
The ladies toilets on Friday night smelt awful which was the sanitary bins, the hand driers were not working and ordinary hand towels had been put out to use, but with 2 of the 3 function rooms in use of probably around 200 people this was not at all hygenic. On Saturday night all 3 function rooms were in use and the toilets had not been cleaned and the same hand towels were in use, so by this time they were too wet to even use. Sunday morning we complained and they were cleaned.
The bar in the function room was not stocked very well and coke and lemonade were in jugs, I had a barcadi and coke on Friday evening which tasted peculiar obviously because the cola was flat and a cheap one taken from the pump system in the main bar.
Do you train your staff, we ordered afternoon tea, 1 small teapot (which had not been wiped when it came of the dishwasher was water stained), two miss match cups and saucers, perhaps was supposed to look like shabby chic, shabby definately but not chic, no teaspoons, no hot water, and he did not know what Earl Grey tea was.
On Saturday afternoon I ordered a lemonade from the main bar what this was I do not know it tasted awful, I don't know if it was cheap flat lemonade, soda water or even cleaning fluid.
In the evening we ordered white wine there was not any chilled the lad offered to put in an ice bucket, some 20 minutes or so later we ordered our wine, which he took from the Chiller quickly placed in an ice bucket for a few seconds, so it was not chilled and white wine needs to be cold.
The food was slopy and not at all professional anybody could have plated it up, admittedly we were on an all inclusive and ate in the room were dancing in, so had a choice of 3 options, the chicken was like a cheaper breast that you can buy in any supermarket or cash n carry, the swede was sloppy with a few pieces of sliced potato, not effort had been made, it would have looked much nicer had the chicken been sliced they probably could have made it go further also, and more veg would have been welcomed, the next night was not much better. The vegetarian options rissito and stroganoff were like baby food, bland, mushy boring.
On the bright side our room was clean, tidy and warm, although the bathroom was in need of some tlc.
We hada great time due to our hostess' brilliant dancing, and company.
