“3 night getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

We booked the Cumberland at short notice, we reserved a double room but when we arrived we upgraded to a double sea view (very pleased we did this) at a discounted rate. The downstairs areas of the hotel are nice art deco, and clean, infact whilst we were there we saw the boy who was cleaning the stairs later cleaning the pool area !. Reception staff were ok, sean and another tall chap with a beard were very good and helpful. Our room was on the small side but well worth the upgrade( if a bit pricey

for a three star) location and views excellent. It was clean if not a bit tired, the shower was useless so only able to use the bath. Bed linen clean but the duvet and pillows had seen better days. The pool area gets very crowded as it caters for three hotels, also there is a notice which says Residents only can use the pool, this is not the case as we were there for three days and saw several groups returning just for the day and people just turning up and booking the chill beds (the waiters only seem to cater for these) we did not have one waiter approach us whilst we were there asking if we needed a drink etc.infact it was quicker to get it yourself. Also people reserve the sunbeds as early as 7am and the management do not remove towels after 90 mins. When we arrived there was a party of non residents taking up 5 sunbeds . There should be a way of policing this so that residents get the beds and non residents have to sit elsewhere especially in the summer when its busy. The drinks are on the expensive side but a good choice. The food was good, breakfast very good and hot ! and the lunch and dinner we had was excellent if not expensive for a three star hotel, but it was very well presented and good quality.Overall I would say its a good hotel which needs a bit of a makeover especially the rooms which are expensive for what you get, but dont let this put you off .Be careful if you order anything up to the room there is a £3.50 charge each time for roomservice from the bar ! Over all a nice hotel if a bit tired, reception staff good, waiting staff need to be more alert.

Room Tip: upgrade to a sea view if you are able too, a pit pricey but worth the view !

Dear poshpinsey,

Thank you for your review. As I am sure you seen, the poolside with the weather has been very busy. We have been trying to 'police' the loungers and area best we can. We do have servers, serving the decking area for those dining, the loungers are only offered service at request.

Unfortunately, all room service is charged for. Our tray charge is only £3-95, and I recently stayed at a hotel where it was £6-50!! Guests are informed when making an order that there will be tray charge.

Overall glad you had an enjoyable time, and hopefully we will be able to welcome you back.

Best Regards,
Sean Nell

I have been a regular visitor to the Cumberland Hotel for the last five years so thought it was about time that I shared my experiences. Firstly the staff are excellent, they really do provide excellent customer service. Whenever I have needed anything they have always been attentive and prompt.

The decor in the hotel is lovely, very contemporary and relaxing. Plenty of comfortable seating and space to relax.

The best part of the hotel in my opinion is the lido deck. When the sun comes out there is simply no better place to be in Bournemouth.

Each year the Hotel is right in the middle of Bournemouth Air Show and from experience being there for it rather than being on the beach with the crowds is a treat.

Whenever anyone comes to Bournemouth to visit me, I always recommend The Cumberland as I know they will be well looked after and have a good visit.

My family stayed at the cumberland for 4 nights, staff are fab, nothing was to much trouble, rooms and breakfast lovely, drinks and evening meal very over priced, If the weather is hot dont plan to sit by the pool, towels are on beds by 7am, ( they are NOT removed after 90 minutes) the pool services 3 hotels and priority given to those who book the chill out beds, which are usually booked by huge unruly local families on the 3 times we attempted to enjoy the pool,we left after 20 mins not a nice experience, the £50 charge is discresionary if the beds have no name on by 12am you can use them freely which the locals did daily, while paying guests had to sit in bar areas. We would not stay here again sadly due to local people mostly large young noisy groups overtaking the daytime. which management seem not only to encourage but advertise. this is our third time at the hotel and sadly our last

Dear lillieWales,

Thank you for your review. Great comments regarding the staff.

The weather has been remarkable recently, and subsequently hotels including us have seen an increase in bookings. Particularly the Cumberland is popular, because of location and its facilities. We have probably the largest out door pool with a large amount of sun loungers. When the sun is up, and I can assure you from 7.30am, there are residents by the pool grabbing their sun loungers for the day. Not until the afternoon once areas are free'd up, do we get our regular not resident residents, who do visit us throughout the year and spend quite a bit of money with us. The poolside policy now is for over 18s only, unless dining with guardians. Non residents have to purchase food or dine with us in order to use the facilities.

I am sorry to hear you won't visit us again.

Sean Nell

An excellent event enjoyed by 4 generations of our family. We were very pleased with all the arrangements; friendly and attentive staff. The room looked wonderful and was kept cool and airy for us on this hot day. All the family commended the quality of the food.

We would like to thank the shift manager in the restaurant on Sunday the 14th July who compensated us greatly as they were not able to grant our order of 2 lamb shanks due to a mix up in the kitchen. You don't experience that level of service often, and the staff were very gracious and professional. The food was amazing also, the best I've had since our wedding breakfast! Thank you

I was fortunate enough to stay at The Cumberland hotel whilst in Bournemouth on business. I travel the world a great deal and have stayed in a variety of hotels and I have to say that The Cumberland should be rated higher than a 3 stars.

Firstly, the hotel is spotlessly clean. During my two night stay I bumped into a member of staff cleaning in the hallway by my room. I was amazed to see that he was cleaning behind, in and around the radiators. I couldn't fault the hygiene in this hotel at all.

If you enjoy a lovely English breakfast then you'll be in your element - the breakfast was great!

I was lucky enough to be able to spend a couple of hours by the swimming pool on Saturday July 13 which was the hottest day of the year so far. The pool was gorgeous and the atmosphere was brilliant. I particularly liked the chillout music being played around the pool.

But what is truly lovely about this wonderful hotel is the employees that work there. Polite, professional and simply lovely to talk to. They helped me a great deal during my two day stay for which I am very grateful.

Book this hotel today! You won't regret it.

Having visited Bouremouth many times we wanted to extend our break in the New Forest by a night and chose this hotel.

Many hotels in Bournemouth seem to attract the older generation as their main clientale but this hotel appeared to accommodate all ages and there was certainly mixed age groups on the night we stayed.

We were there on a Friday night and the hotel is located on the East Cliff which is a short walk away from the main pier and town centre but far enough away not to suffer from too much noise.

Parking is very limited but you are able to use the car parks of the the two sister hotels next door. Failing that there is plenty of on road parking for which you do have to pay but prices are reasonable.

The best feature of this hotel was our balcony with its stunning view straight over the sea. The hotel also benefits from an outdoor pool which we didn't use but which looked very clean and was very popular.

All in all a great located hotel for a one night stay or longer.

Room Tip: Front facing rooms on the 3rd floor or higher seem to have the best views
