“called to ask...”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

Just called to ask about the deal on Groupon and a coupon I'd received at Christmas that included a pamper day at a spa... the woman that answered the phone helpfully said she could direct my call to the spa but that there was no on available to answer my questions about reservations... hmmmm... I think I'll look into another place!

Stayed last night at the Hallmark and were a little worried about what we might find, having read previous reviews. We need not have worried at all. Warm welcome from lovely lady upon check-in, and we were allowed into our room an hour early, as it was ready for us. The room ticked all the boxes - warm, quiet, spotlessly clean and very spacious, with a refurbished bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable. Lovely, elegant room with a high ceilling, with tea-making facilities. No safe though, which is unusual these days. Although there was a wedding taking place at the hotel, we heard no noise at all at night. We shared a landing with just three other rooms. Breakfast was good too, taken in a modern, attractive area. No time to use the spa, unfortunately, though we did have a look and it looked very welcoming. Not sure I would use the 'conservatory' pool, as it was very public! All staff very pleasant and made us feel valued customers. We went to the BIC to see The Jacksons and found the walk easy - 10-15 minutes (though it does involve a fairly steep hill!!). Good position for the town and seafront too. Yes, the hotel does have some areas which look a little tired - particularly the landing outside our room, and some of the furniture in our room could have done with a bit of an update - but on the whole it was great and we will definitely return. One night wasn't long enough! Thank you.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 99, which if you are looking for peace and quiet, is great.

This will have been the second time we have stayed at the Hallmark Hotel for a weekend. The room we were allocated was a good size and the bathroom huge, everything was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable, our only gripe was that the radiators did not appear to be working on the whole of our floor and therefore we were provided with a fan convector heater as a substitute heat form, this did actually work fine. Breakfasts are good, plenty of choice and helpful members of staff, however, all of the cooked items were warm rather than hot as they were being kept warm with a candle beneath the tin trays, shame, as the food could have been fantastic. Location of the hotel is perfect for the town and seafront, only a 10 minute walk and you are down the the B.I.C. and pier. Will definitely be staying here again.

It looks very nice downstairs, but the rooms upstairs are a disaster. There are major problems with basic facilities. We were booked into room 87 for a weekend . When we arrived there was no heating and it was VERY cold. We were assured heating would be sorted out, and went out. When we came back there was no heating. Again we were assured it would be sorted out, but no, it wasnt. We asked for a different room but no, that wasnt possible either. Then the electrics went off, and unfortunately as the shower has an elecrtic pump we had no hot water either. In summary we had a room with no heating , lighting, or hot water and this is supposed to be a hotel. Camping is better than this. I complained at reception numerous times and eventually got an electric heater for the room, but obviously this didnt work as there wasnt electricity. We couldn't even watch TV. I complained in writing on our return and received a PART refund, but not a full refund presumably because they thought as they didnt also put us in hospital with food poisioning we should pay for the bacon and eggs we ate in the morning. This hotel advertises as a luxury spa. Far from it. Full of cold guests who have all prepaid and wont get their money back.. The place really doesnt deserve customers, except the barman who was very good, and should probably get a job in a better place.

I have stayed at this hotel before, but this time it was freezing cold. the rooms all had extra heaters in them but they were still cold. There were no quilts just a thin blanket on the bed. Staff were aware of the issue but nothing was done., There was also a problem with the water temperature (it was cold) and the electricity. A poor experience overall.

I have just got back from a 2night getaway with my boyfriend and I wish we were still there!! The hotel is really easy to find and never had any problems parking. The reception staff are welcoming and helpful. We stayed in room 55 (executive room) it was really spacious, warm and clean. I had read before the stay that some people's room was really cold and damp so I was a little worried, but fortunately we didn’t experience this! The bathroom isn’t eye catching but there was nothing wrong with it. The only thing bad with the room is that it was right next to the stairway so it became quite noisy in the middle of the night from people returning from night’s out/weddings but this isn’t the hotels fault and it didn’t keep me up all night.
We had breakfast included which I’m so glad we did. The coffee you receive with this was delicious. Not like the coffees you get with breakfast at other hotels. Felt like a real costa coffee! There isnt lots of choice at breakfast but if you like an English breakfast then youll be happy. We went for breakfast at 9am on Saturday morning and it was all available and full. But we went for breakfast on Sunday morning around half 9 and it was really busy and lots of things were empty. The staffs were trying to keep it full but unfortunately the trays would be left empty for a while before getting re stocked.
The hotel is a 5min walk from the town centre. Didn’t need to get a taxi anywhere.
Overall I had a lovely break and I would definitely recommend. Can’t wait to return in the near future!

First impressions when we went in was nice. We were attending an event so we were expecting lots of people there. Check in was ok, we had room 53, second floor, took the lift, no probs. went into the room and was hit by coldness of the room. I had read the reviews. The radiators were cold, but also we had no electricity, phoned reception and didn't get an answer, possibly because they were busy checking people in. Went down and said about heating and power. Was told the power would be sorted soon, which actually wasn't that helpful because we needed to get ready and the bathroom had no window we couldn't see a thing. The heating, well apparently it should be working, sorry it isn't and the room is freezing. They would look into it. We went and unpacked and to be fair the room seemed comfortable enough, it was small but well equipped. We went down to meet our friends and after a while my husband went back to reception and was told the power was back working. On arrival at the room, it was still freezing. We phoned reception again. 10 minutes later a member of staff came up with an electric fire. Said she couldn't do anything because maintenance had gone home but she had written it on his sheet. We reported this when maintenance was in the hotel. But again she said we had a fire. So that apparently makes it ok. Anyhow, the heating was never sorted even though we went to reception on 4 more occasions. We were not offered another room like one of our friends were. While we were booking out today, we mentioned it again, and they gave us a number where we could write to make a complaint. Also there were lots of guests complaining of having no heat in their rooms. Very disappointing. On a plus side the breakfasts were fantastic, all the staff in the bar and restaurants were brilliant. The food we had on the Friday night was very tasty but served on cold plates, and our function on Saturday was very enjoyable. Please get the heating sorted. I would return to this hotel, but I would make sure we have heating and electricity first. It was heard to be said that the hotel were blaming other hotels in the area for writing the bad reviews. This I think is untrue!
