“Great Weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2013

My husband and I recently stayed at The Connaught Hotel, In Bournemouth for a Masonic Ladies weekend.
We had a really memorable weekend. All the staff were so polite and efficient from checking in at the front desk to banqueting and room service and all really helpful. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. It is obvious that they run a happy team.
The banqueting hall looked wonderful on the Saturday night with the splash of red most impressive. And the food was extremely good throughout the weekend and we even got a choice on the Friday night quite impressive for about 100 guests. We also had great fun at dinner on the Sunday as we stayed an extra night.
Our room was fantastic so large and clean (fantastic to have so much space coming from our small house) the hotel is only a few minutes’ walk to the lovely beach and prom at West Cliff and also has a clean and well run leisure centre with Jacuzzi steam & sauna rooms and beauty salon.
We highly recommend this establishment whether it is for a function or just a weekend away we are already trying to plan another weekend there.

It would seem churlish to rate the hotel rated top in Bournemouth with a "3" but one of the main functions - some would say the primary function - of a hotel is to give a visitor a good night's sleep then sadly The Connaught fails the test. Of course, in terms of bed matresses, one man's meat is another man's poison and you can't please everybody all the time but - and this is important - installing what would appear to be cheap mattresses is a false economy. The mattress in our room - 35 - was mightily uncomfortable with springs that could be felt through the covers and which creaked and groaned on each shift of weight. Sitting on the edge of the bed produced a "sandwiching" of the top and lower edges of the mattress which is an indicator of too few springs. We did point this out to the reception who said, inconsequentially, that the mattressess had been replaced recently. (In passing I should say that there are one or two other reports on Tripadvisor that mention the uncomfortable beds at the Connaughht).
Otherwise we can see why this hotel could be high on people's lists. Friendly and efficient staff at breakfast and a well serviced Spa are pluses in anyone's book. It is close to the beach and just 10 minutes downhill walk into the town centre. Car parking, I guess, might be a little tight in the high holiday months as on a wet weekend in February we had to wait a while to find a space early in the evening.
There is evidence that beyond the reception and bars the decor is a little tired with some threadbare edges to the stairs and a curious black and yellow tape bodge-up to carpet/tile join just by the entrance to the stairs which would appear to have been there for some time.
Would we come here again? Well, to be honest, no. There are so many other hotel choices in Bournemouth that we'd certainly try somewhere else in the hope we'd hit on a more comfortable bed.

Dear Roger

Firstly let me thank you for your review and your generous comments about our staff. During my tenure here the hotel has been developed around the comments and the suggestions of our guests all of which, good or bad, are taken very seriously and make us so customer oriented. After reading your review the first thing I did this morning was to meet with the guests who are currently occupying room 35. They said “one of the most comfortable beds they have ever slept in”. How do I now deal with this? The bed is relatively new and we don’t buy cheap beds so I think the best way forward is for me to regularly check with guests over the next few weeks for their opinion – this may well be a case of “one man’s meat is another man’s poison” and clearly one bed does not suit all - out of 800 reviews less than 1% comment negatively about the beds.
With regard to the black and yellow tape you can see quite clearly that the whole of the reception area is being refurbished and the area by the lift and stairs is yet to be finished. The black and yellow tape is to warn guests to take extra care.
I do hope you change your mind a visit us again.

Best wishes

Usually head to cornwall our favourite haunt, but left it late to book so decided to try a hotel in Bournemouth as wife wanted to visit. I booked online for 2 nights and mentioned i would like an upgrade if available as it was the wifes birthday. Minutes later my phone rang and i was offered an upgrade which i took. On arrival, parking was easy, we checked in and were pleased with the suite we had complete with a birthday card and a voucher for 2 drinks at the bar. The staff were amazing, so quick to help they couldnt do anymore for us. The swimming pool facilities were fantastic and very clean. Nice friendly staff. The wife had a massage which she loved. Great to have wi-fi in the room. Breakfast was a treat, the staff excellent, the food very good, not everyone likes the toast machine but we like it! The lovely older gent who was manning the breakfast stainless steel canopies was so proud of what he was doing it was just excellent! Up and down with a generous smile, well done indeed. The bar staff were excellent also. We enjoyed the stay and will be back. The only slight disappointment was the lack of English staff working at the hotel but this does seem so common now.

Your review was a total pleasure to read Snewsham, thank you very much indeed and I always enjoy knowing that these birthdays are such a success - after all you only get the opportunity once a year to make a fuss of your partner so it has to be just right!!

Stayed 3 nights, comfortable & friendly hotel nice atmosphere. Facilities were excellent, pool was lovely, everywhere was clean & tidy. Food well presented & evening meal was excellent, as was the breakfast. A comfortable place to stay with easy access to the centre of town, park or beach.
The staff were always friendly, helpful and confident, nothing was too much trouble.

We stayed for 2 nights for my wife`s birthday she had no idea where we were going I kept it a secret as she had taken me to this hotel 18 months ago for my 40th and we had such a good time I just had to return and i was so glad I did.
I booked the Orchid suite which was just perfect my wife was well pleased, I had also asked if the hotel could arrange for a lemon drizzle cake to be made by they chef and placed in our room for our arrival , and they did just that and it was perfectly presented and tasted great (compliments to your chef) they also gave us a complimentary drinks voucher and a birthday card which was a nice touch thank you !
We also had an evening meal in Blakes restaurant, which was very good the maitre d` in charge was very helpful and his advice on what to order was spot on .
Breakfast was excellent both mornings it was nice to see the same friendly face of the gentlemen from 18 months ago serving the hot buffet .
We did use the spa area but only gave a 4 on our room comps card and on here because the jacuzzi was not working and I like to laze in there while my wife swims as I swim like a brick !
Finally just a big thank you to all your staff who helped make our stay so great everyone of them couldn`t do more to help we will most definitely be back again !

Really pleased you made it back Richtrees and even more so to read that your wife's 40th was such a success. Apologies about the spa pool but the dosing system was malfunctioning and we felt it better to be safe than sorry - all up and running now in time for your next visit!!

Best wishes and thank you for your super review.

We booked the Hotel Connaught for a Masonic Ladies Festival Weekend and we cannot praise it highly enough. From the moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted with exceptional hospitality, the allocated rooms were newly refurbished to a very high standard, as were the public areas. There were plenty of staff on hand to look after guests. Our 65 guests had a choice of menu and the food was superb. The staff were so helpful and attentive nothing was too much for them. Great attention was paid to detail and our banquet on the saturday evening had a great wow factor. We would highly recommend the Connaught and would have loved to stay even longer. SImon, Paul, Elkin and their staff worked really hard to make the weekend special .........................and succeeded!

Booked this hotel for a 1 night stop on 14th December 2012 in case the weather was too bad to drive home after a show at the BIC. The hotel was in the midst of Christmas celebrations and there were two functions taking place that evening. The staff were amazing. They were extremely busy but all were happy and smiling and nothing was too much trouble. The spirit of Christmas was certainly there that night. What a happy place. Excellent breakfast in the morning in the dining room, with attention to detail. The fabric of the hotel decor is very comfortable and attractive. Our Standard double room was good enough for the one night but when we stay again (notice when not if) for any reason longer than one night we would upgrade for a little more space. We have stayed in many hotels of various grades and so much does depend on the staff and their attitude they make or break any stay. This hotel was GREAT!!
