This is the sister hotel of the Eastcliff Court next door. It is supposed to be the better 4 Star hotel of the 2 and we booked here for in between Christmas and New Year because the Eastcliff, which we have stayed at for many years, was having coaches and we didn't want to be there with a loud crowd and limited lounge space . We have always loved the Eastclif so thought that the "better" hotel would be better. After all it has a swimming pool, well, it's more like a splash pool. An excellent hair dresser called James, a sauna and a keep fit room with mostly non working equipment. We stayed dinner bed and breakfast and unfortunately convinced our other friends to stay there as well so I booked 9 rooms for us all. We were warned to make sure that we were given newly renovated rooms as otherwise they were awful. We did have a nice bright room , in daylight, overlooking the sea which we were told had recently been renovated. Yes it may have been, but the cheap decorations and furniture could just as easily have been at a Premier Inn. The bed was comfortable, the lighting abysmal in both the bedroom and the bathroom so my wife had difficulty putting on her makeup and I couldn't see to shave. The bedroom and bathroom were cold all the time so I had to use a fan heater to stay warm in the bedroom but unable to heat the bathroom. There also was no extractor fan in the bathroom so that if one if us been to the loo for a number 2 it was extremely unpleasant afterwards. Now the food: compared to the Eastcliff (which we know very well) it was totally unacceptable. For the first 2 days there was virtually no vegetables so we complained and for the next 3 days they did provide some. The combination of dishes was awful such as chicken with gnocchi! If they had soup for a snack at lunchtime it was guaranteed to be the same that evening or the evening one the same the day after. After 3 nights they repeated the menu virtually word for word which we complained about so they offered us either steak or sole which otherwise was an additional £10. We were told by people staying at the Eastcliff that these items were on their menu at no extra cost. Now this is a good one, you will like this! On one of the days they offered a cream tea. They brought in ready cut scones already covered with jam and the cream had obviously been sprayed from a can. SO I went next door to the Eastcliff where they were also serving cream teas but they had beautiful uncut scones together with bowls of jam and bowls of clotted cream. I took a dozen scones from the hotel back to the Carlton and showed the reception girl who was very sour and unhelpful but who called the duty manager who fortunately happened to be David the manager next door who we have known for years. He apologised and arranged for our party to be served with a proper cream tea. This should never have occurred in the first place , disgusting. Next the men's loo downstairs. It was so disgusting no one wanted to go into it. There were towels on the floor where the urinals had leaked and they were soaking up the urine. The smell was horrendous. One of more of the sinks were cracked and the toilets filthy. The furniture in the lounges is so old that they are seriously uncomfortable and full of dust so that when you sat down a cloud erupted from them. There were no card tables for those of us that wanted to play bridge. When it rained the water came through the ceiling and they had buckets in the bar area and lounge so the carpet smelled of wet cats. One of our crowd even had water dripping into their bedroom which we are sure made the husband unwell with flu like symptoms (they got a partial refund). In all this was a holiday we never want to repeat. SO make sure that if you want to stay at a Menzies hotel make sure it is the Eastcliff not the Carlton after all it is cheaper as well. We have now found out that the Menzies group has been recently bought out from being in administration so let's hope that the new owners sort it out. THIS SHOULD IN NO WAY BE CONSIDERED A 4 STAR HOTEL. WE ALL REALLY DESERVE AT THE VERY LEAST A FREE WEKEND THERE OR REFUND TO MAKE UP FOR THE LET DOWN BUT IF WE WERE OFFERED FREE ACCOMODATION, WE WOULD WANT TO STAY AT THE EASTCLIFF. Ask for Paul the general manager of the Eastcliff Court who is very helpful or David who is sometimes the relief manager and is also excellent. The new owners had better not get rid if them if they are altering the hotel management in any way.
