“Very friendly staff and comfortable hotel”
Reviewed April 21, 2010

Stayed at the Hotel during April 2010. The hotel was very clean and staff very helpful and friendly. Room was kept spotlessly clean. Nice decor. Food was excellent. Location only a few minutes walk from seafront, town centre, gardens and attractions. Bus stop outside hotel. The hotel has new owners and refurbishment is almost complete. Just a few more bedrooms to upgrade. Lounge, dining room, ballroom all light, airy and nicely decorated. Garden small but very neat. Have booked another break for October this year.

We went on a weekend break special - learn to ballroom dance - with some friends. The cost was very reasonable - the hotel is a bit old, but in the process of being renovated, and under recently changed management.

We had a very good time, it is what it is and aside from the cost would probably prefer to stay there in preference to a Hilton.

Everything very clean, staff very friendly and helpful.
Breakfasts as good as they come, dinner a sensible menu - not haute cuisine but usually beautifully presented and nicely cooked, and with very snappy service.

We liked it and would happily stay there again.

Just returned from a really great 'Learn to Dance' weekend at the Mayfair Hotel. We were there with a group of 22 friends to celebrate my 50th Birthday and I do not have a single negative thing to say about it. The rooms, food, service and warm welcome were exceptional, as was the dance tuition provided by Philip Wylie. It was also incredibly good value for money and we are already talking about a repeat visit. Exceeded all my expectations.

The new owners are really making their mark at this hotel and the reviews written when the hotel were under the previous owners, in my opinion, no longer reflect the present situation. We stayed for one night to see what improvements have been made.

The public areas have either been refurbished (ballroom, dining room and toilets) or really cleaned up. The plumbing issues have been dealt with and nearly half of the bedrooms have already been refurbished leaving them bright, clean and airy. The balance of the rooms will be tackled as soon as it is possible to do so without disrupting the running of the hotel during the peak booking season.

As ballroom dancers were we particularly pleased with the ballroom. The floor is not large but the hotel is controlling the number of users to ensure that all get a good dancing experience. The floor is ONE OF THE BEST we have danced on!!

Of course there are some disadvantages with hotels of this age. The lift is small and only serves the first and second floor. Developments over the years have left the hotel with a somewhat odd layout. All of these oddities were out-weighed by the warmth of the welcome, the cooked breakfast served hot at our table and the excellent value for money.

Location was great, receiption was nice, but the lift was tiny and didnt even go up to our floor, trying to find the room was harder than getting out of a maze!
The room was dark, the lights in the bathroom didnt work the light in the bedroom above the mirror didnt even have a bulb!! The shower curtain was old and dirty and the shower didnt work properly. The only thing we enjoyed was the breakfast!!!
Would rather stay in a tent than stay there again!!!!

This hotel looks lovely as you walk up to it and walk into it. The reception and main rooms downstairs are nicely decorated and look quite stylish BUT our room was very dull and dated with polystyrene ceiling tiles and awful wallpaper and a very squeaky bed! Very different to what you expect after walking through a nicely decorated reception area.

The lift is VERY small and it is easy to get confused/lost around the hotel as there are lots of doors and small flights of stairs leading you here there and everywhere! Very odd indeed.

We paid £49 for room only and i think if i'd have paid any more than that i'd have been extremely annoyed, breakfast included in the £49 would have been a nice gesture.

The hotel isn't far from the seafront/pier but it is quite hilly so thats just something to note.

This hotel is OK - it is within a short walk of the lovely beach as well as all the shops / town centre / train station. That is a definite bonus.

The downstairs of the hotel is very nice - nice dining room (I did not eat there - just looked in), lounge area and bar.

The car park is very small - too small for the number of guests - although the staff were helpful in finding us spaces and it worked out OK in the end - despite us arriving quite late on the night we were checking in.

Our bedroom (2 double beds) was OK - in need of refurb but it was clean and tidy. It was also quite small but we weren't too bothered as we were only really there for sleeping and spent all our time out and about.

The bathroom was quite bad. Again, it was clean and tidy with soap and shampoo provided...but the shower was awful (too hot / too cold / not nearly powerful enough).

The reception and bar staff were very good - helpful and courteous.
