“Perfect for a night out in Bournemouth”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Stayed in a group of 14 for a Stag-Do on Saturday night. The Lazy Shark exceeded our expectations and it was by far the best value accommodation in Bournemouth. The town centre is a short and cheap bus journey away, and the taxi back only cost £10 in the early hours of the morning. The shower had good pressure/temperature and was much needed after a day in the New Forest playing Battlefield Live. The beds were comfortable enough. Darren the owner was helpful on arrival and allowed us room to park our mini-bus. There's a small kitchen area which we didn't really use but could be helpful for fixing up a snack if you're on a budget.

The bar area looked clean and recently refurbished but we didn't get a chance to have a drink down there as there happened to be a ladys-only night on this particular date. Not a problem as there's a Wetherspoons across the road.

Overall if you just need a shower, a bed and a roof over your head after a night out this is the perfect place to stay. If you are expecting luxury and will be coming home early expecting a long nights sleep then i'd advise spending a lot more money staying in a hotel.

Room Tip: The Lazy Shark would be best if you have a large group to fill both rooms, so you can have the place...

Myself and a group of friends *attempted* to stay here over the weekend of the Bournemouth 7s festival (end of May 2011). We booked beds for all 13 members of our party and paid nearly all of our deposit in one go, having been told we could wait a little while to pay the remaining amount. However, when we rang to confirm our booking and pay the rest of our deposit we were told that the hostel had double booked the beds and that we would no longer be able to stay there. This was 5 days before we were meant to arrive... Not to worry, the manager told us, he would help us find somewhere else to stay as he knew the area well and he would make sure the money we had paid (a substantial amount) would be refunded to us asap. ONE MONTH later and we are still waiting to be refunded after countless emails and telephone conversations and false promises of payments being made to us. Oh, and we never did receive any help in finding alternative accommodation... DO NOT book with this hostel.

An excellent hostel. Darren the owner gave each of the 11 of us a warm welcome and a free pint on arrival! We had booked for 12 but one of the lads couldnt make it and I feared having to pay the full price for two nights, not to worry, Darren wrote it off, Good man. There is a bar with pool table downstairs and the beers are a good price £2.50 for premium lager and 50p a game. The lady who cleans the rooms is cool too! Please remember if you visit at weekends, expect your bunk mate to be partying long into the night which was not a problem as Darren ssaid 'You're here to have a good time'...

arived with a group of friends at the lazy shark and the bar looked ok abut thats as far as the good points go for this place the food is cheap but of a genraly low quality you would be better off crossing the road and visiting the pub across the road its cheaper and has food of a higher quality.
the rooms are overcrowded and have no spare space for any form of luggage, there are two toiles but one was out of order and only one shower in with the only working toilet so using the tiolet or the shower was almost impossible in the morning or evening (we had to use the bars toilet)
there is no form of any security here as the rooms are accessed by codes and when the bar is closed you enter via a small ally from the street littered with sick and used seringes to a back door to the back of the hostal witch was coverd in dog poo and wee (nice in flipflops).
there is a small area to park your car but it will get blocked in so its best not to use it i spoke to a couple of lads to get them to move there car and thay had been kicked out as the oweners had over booked the beds and when it came to the fact we where told there was another four people using the room we had fully booked and paied for we all left with no form of refund.
you would be better of using one of meny of the reasonably priced b&b's or hotels in bournemouth as boscome is not a nice place and is too far from main town for a night out.

Dont be alarmed when exiting Pokesdown station when you see hilberlies and too many rundown cafe/restaurants and antique shops, this hostel makes up for it. This is a great hostel as it has a great bar and restaurant with it, its just a pity that it is not closer to Bournemouth central and that its the only hostel in Bournemouth! If you travelling with a group of friends and looking for a good time then you cant go wrong by staying here. Rooms are neat and clean but only 1 bathroom to share with 2 other rooms, and you have to enter a FBI code to get into the hostel at night and into your room... this does not mix well with alcohol! Boscombe beach is a 10 minute walk and then its an easy walk to Bournemouth pier and beach.
